I just examined the shank of one of my Peterson System pipes and discovered that it was full of pipe cleaner fluff -- some moist, some tobacco-stained, a horrible mess! I was finally able to remove most of it using a shank brush, but now I've taken a look at some of my other pipes and found the same problem.
Anyone have a better idea of how to deal with, or, better yet, prevent this problem?

I use the extra fluffy kind (BJ Longs) but after using a couple of pipe cleaners I also blow through the stem and the shank (I usually separate them before cleaning)
Other than that, maybe try another brand of cleaners?

I usually blow on the stem and shank to loosen anything trapped within, mostly tobacco but it seems it serves another purpose. I do notice some fluffy bits on the tenon when cleaning though.

I sort of strip the cleaners a time or two, pulling down with my finger and thumb from top to bottom. That gets rid of most of the fluff. Then, like Number Six, I blow through stem and shank after cleaning.

Part of my weekly maintenace is to run a drill bit through my regular heavy used pipes. Followed by BJ Long's

Brush cleaners...yep happen's to us all.

It's usually meant for using with photography gear to remove dust and small debris, but I've found it also works great with blowing shots of air through my pipes when I want to make sure I've got clear airways.

I do the same as tennsmoker, and blow through the stem as well. If I feel I have something lodged in there while smoking, I'll run a bristled pipe cleaner several times down the stem. This usually takes care of things.

Great ideas, all. Thank you! And my wife already has one of those dangerous-looking air blasters (what do you think a TSA agent would do if he found one in your bag?)for use on her cameras, so I'll try that too.
Thanks. :worship:

The rayon pipe cleaners don't leave lint, but they also don't absorb and clean as well as cotton.
