For me, there is no real science behind it, sometimes a blend just "sings" in a particular pipe without any real reason behind it. Sometimes a pipe will smoke a certain type of tobacco cut better, sometimes it has to do with flavor, tobacco temperature, etc. I have a little wide no named bulldog that smokes Navy Flake and Frog Morton better than anything else. Crossing the two flavors might be a no no in some peoples eyes but those are the only two blends that pipe sees. For English blends that have a lot of different components in them, I prefer bigger pipes to get a fuller flavor. It something that you will get a feel for over time the more familiar you become with tobacco flavors and the way certain pipes smoke, be it draw capability, bowl size, etc.
