According to this link a factory worker with 3 dependents took home less than $100 a week in 1962. Weren't smoking Balkan Sobranie on that income!

Yeah, I hear you on that... I can remember buying premium gasoline (the good leaded 100 octane stuff) for $.35 a gallon, those were good days. Yes, we do make more now than then, but there are so many other things that we feel we can't live without that takes money out of our pockets. Back in '62, no one had to pay a cellphone, internet,cable/satellite bill either. So in the end, we may make more, but I do feel that it doesn't go as far as money did back then.

I recall a study that compared income to the cost of bread and gasoline in different time periods.

The point being, bread and gasoline are two things that most everyone buys, and how much could you buy with your salary.

The result was, you made much less, but the money you made would buy lots more of those two essentials in the past.
