While I love a good agua vitae (smokey scotch or spicy bourbon) with my smoke, to grab at those sweeter notes, I really enjoy a good after dinner tawny port the most. The complexities of the wine really act as a wake up to the palate of the smoke and vice versa. I love the earthy notes, the fruits, nuts, berries, smokes and woods of both pleasures. Just curious as to others' thoughts. Anybody ever do this pairing? Or with other wines?

Pipe and a good English is one of my favorite parings. I also enjoy smoking while drinking other red wines like merlot or pinot noir, but I most often smoke while drinking a beer such as a stout or porter.

i am not much of a drinker myself, so it is usually coffee for me while smoking... so yeah, pretty much coffee all day. every now and then i do get in the mood for a good craft beer, but that's about it for me.

I have an addictive nature so... pipe + alcohol, bring em on. I'll try most things at least once. But I have zero experience with ANY port wines. I try(not very hard) to pair my smokes with a drink that will refresh my pallet rather than "pair" nicely with the smoke.
So if i'm going for a rich flavorful smoke there is no way the drink I have should be as rich as the smoke. If my smoke is light my drink is dark. I tend to appreciate the major contrast in the totally opposite flavor profiles.
And I have not had a wine yet with my pipe. That's a whole other world that I will tackle at a later date. 8)

I think a good bottle of port and smoking is a great pairing. Port would be my choice drink tobacco if I had the time and money. Such is life, but as it is I also like coffee or a good class of water with my pipe.

Oh my, it's better than 30 years since I've had port. Why? I have no answer to that.

I'm primarily a beer and bourbon drinker these days. Bourbon, any will do I'm not particular. Beer has to be dark, porters and stouts.
What I recall of the port from days gone by is that it was very sweet and tended to be potent. Is that right?
A cup of sweetened black tea certainly brings lat blends to life for me.

Hmmm, sweet plus alcohol plus baccy... sounds worth investigating! (-;

Port is a natural pairing with Va flakes if you ask me. I love the stuff. Try dry sherry with Va/perique or golden Va. Madeira wines are very nice with light Vas as well.
