Two pipes comparably priced, one a Pete, one a Sav,which one would you choose based on value, craftsmanship, and resale value? Price range 75-100.

I have a Sav, very nice pipe. I don't think Petes have filters, my Sav does and is compatible with the filters from my corncobs.. so there is that.
If there is no difference other then name, I think Peterson's are generally nicer looking in fit&finish from what I have seen at the local pipe shop, but not enough for me to turn my nose up at a Sav.
I dunno man, what type of pipe are we talking about?

Which one looks better to you ?
Twomdavs, two,petersons.. I like them all four. One Pete Harp in a 999 shape and one Sav Miele in 626 are special, but that's because the Misses bought them.
My next pipe ? A peterson.... Gives me an excuse to go get another Sav to keep the balance ;-) or maybe a Grabow, or a Parker, or a ... (sigh)
All kidding aside, both are great smokers.

I would always pick a Peterson because of the great range of pipes and their 125 years at being good at what they do, if you don't like P-Lip get a fishtail, if you want a filter, have one, when you have bit the hell out of the stem, order a new one, great service from a historical firm. :puffpipe:

I personally like both makers, Each produces very fine pipes and have many styles and finishes to choose from and at different price ranges. Pick the one that best suits your want and your need. :puffy:

Savinelli is only 11yrs younger than Peterson. Both great companies with very much history behind them. I have three Peterson Aran pipes with P-Lip and love them all. They all smoke well and look great. Just got a Savinelli Caramella and have had a few break in bowls in it. Even with the filter in the Caramella smokes wonderfully. You really can't go wrong with either brand.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all Savinellis still made at the same factory where they've always been? I've heard some Petersons are cut in France, some in Germany, some in Italy, and are only finished in Ireland. I hope this rumor is false, but it kind of takes some of the Irish-ness out of them.

I am not sure which direction to suggest, I love both. I would just go with whichever one you like the look of the most, either way you'll get great pipe.

Thanks all for your opinions. I went with the Savinelli Piazza because I liked their rustification a bit better. I'll try a Pete next time the wife buckles.

I have had the same question.....

Pretty soon I will be in the market for a new pipe, and I am pretty sure I will want to get either a pete or a sav.......

It is such a hard choice.

I like and own both. Sav does rustication in a way I prefer. But Peterson's classic designs are most closely to my taste.
All things being equal -- which they never are -- I default to something Irish (which my ancestors were) over something Italian (which they were not).

Three of my four current briars are Savinelli, the fourth is a Boswell. I love my Savs. I've looked at Petersons, but I prefer the style of the Savs. It has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a purebred Italian...or does it?

If one likes shapes that are a bit out of the ordinary, than Petersons are the way to go. But either brand is a great smoke for the price. I own 3 Savs and 7 Petes, because I am partial to the P-lips.

You can count me in the Savinelli camp. They are some of the finest pipes I have ever smoked. Even their budget pipes are nice.

Peterson was founded by two Germans and a later add in Austrian. Does that take away from Peterson's Irishness? What does it matter where Peterson carves the pipes? The pipes still smoke well and look good.
