I recently picked up this pipe in new unsmoked condition but haven’t been able to come across any info on it. The finish is one I’ve never seen before and the only other feature that stands out is the system reservoir is deeper than any of my other System pipes. I reached out to Mark Irwin and he was stumped as well.

Special Limited Edition ???? Just guessing ... the finish looks like a 1980s Aran but again just guessing. Good Luck .... maybe send an e-mail directly to Peterson for identification ???

By the way that is a beautiful pipe with spectacular birdseye ...

Thanks - I really like the look of this pipe. It’s hard to capture with my poor photography skills but the darker finish brings out the grain in a way that makes it appear almost 3D. I can’t say I’ve handled too many pipes but this one stands out

Limited Edition pipes did morph into POY pipes, but I've never seen an SLE stamped pipe - I wonder if one of the big Peterson shops did this (Black Swan, etc.)?
That was Mark’s guess as well - a special run for a pipe shop given the lack of any official Peterson marketing for it out there

That's how my Aran 68 Irish Army is ... it appears smooth but as you handle it you can lightly feel the grain and birdseye ... it has a texture to it under the smooth finish.

I saw one many moons ago, like mid to early nineties. I assumed it was from the UK tobacconist that the owner always ordered from.
There’s a few more weird Pete’s out there….but nobody was paying attention.
