Peterson System Pipe Smoking Advise Needed

I just posted some pic of an old Peterson pre-republic system 0 pipe that I restored, and I'd like to smoke it, but I'm not sure if the stem is complete, or if it needs a tube in the tenon. Also I don't know if I should lightly sand the stem where it goes into the shank so as to get a better grip, so it will stay put better.

Suggestions anyone?

Do not sand it.
Push the stem firmly into the pipe, load it, light it, smoke it.
Don't over think it.

Got it! Thanks guys, sometimes I feel like such a nooge! Loading it now with some Petersons Deluxe Mixture! (Hey, I didn't say I wasn't a little OCD about smoking the same brand tobacco in the same brand pipe! Sorry the only therapy I can afford is pipe smoking...) :crazy:
