Good day to you all!

So, I just recieved this beautiful pipe in the mail. It is a Peterson System 302. It is branded Peterson System Star on the briar, and Sterling Silver on the band. And it is in great shape.

Now, I actually never heard of the Star series, could you tell me something about it? Also, a hint about it´s age would be great. Thank you!

Here's info from the Petersons Collectors forum:
I have previously tried to find out information on the origins of the'Star' series of systems. I have a couple of the original ones from the late nineteen sixties/seventies.The ones I have, are what I would consider of 'premier' quality, with sterling silver ferrules and have a MATT red finish and colouring.Having said that, I had previously spotted an e-bay offering that was a walnut colour? So in answer to your question, I think they were originally 'Premier' grade's that were enhanced for selling as a separate series. In the beginning, probably to attract Hippies and flower children!! emoticon

They vanished for a few years and were then resurrected 2 years ago.The modern version s having a shinier ruby red finish.
I have still to find out the true origin of the original series and why it was called 'Star'. Accurate Peterson records for that period are almost non existent.

It appears to have a hallmark date on the silver, the letter (not shown in your picture) will tell the year it was made. Use this chart:

I fixed your last picture (you can post the IMG string from Photobucket directly into your thread - don't use the "IMG" button on the reply box). But I still can't make out the letter.

Thank you for your help!

I am also having trouble reading the letter on the band, it is very worn in that particular spot, but it looks like the straight "l", which would make it 1976. It is in very good shape for that age. High quality briar for sure.

That is very nice information, thank you very much.
P.S. I am currently enjoying in it a large bowl of Peterson`s Sherlock Holmes, and it smokes wonderfully, even though it was completely reamed (not by me). Loving it, this really made my day. Cheers!
