Hello all! I am looking at buying a Peterson system pipe and im a bit unsure about the sizing as their website is a bit vague. I know it lists bowl dimensions in mm but that's kind of hard to visualize. I am fairly new to pipes so I don't know the sizes that well. I am looking between the 302 and the 303, problem is im looking for something "medium" size that is good for a 45-60m smoke. My only pipe currently is a savinelli one 601 and according to the website this is 20x40mm bowl and for me is the perfect size, but the 303s I find are all listed at 19x32, and this seems quite small.

Does anyone have these that can offers some input about the sizings ?

The 303 is not a big pipe at all. If you like the shape but want bigger, go with the 302. Having said that, 45-60 minutes is about right for me with a 303 and I can clench it a long time because of the size.

If you want a bigger billiard, try the 307. I tend to smoke mine only if I can hold on to it. It's a little too big for me to clench for any length of time.

Yeah im mostly looking for something "standard" size, not small and not big. I have to smoke on my balcony so I don't usually like sitting out there for 1,5hrs+ at a time to have a smoke. I just don't want to buy a pipe that only goes for like 20 minutes or something.

What cut do you usually smoke? If you’re smoking a ribbon cut the 302 is probably the right size. If you’re mostly smoking flakes and coins, the 303 would likely work better

I smoke a mix to be honest, and im looking for a good all arounder pipe, but I do rub out flakes so it ends up being like ribbon cut anyways i guess.

Go to the Smoking Pipes website and start looking around. They have pipe dimensions, chamber dimension, different photos of each pipe, etc.

If you’re looking for a certain size chamber of Peterson, you can use their pipe finder tool to literally filter down to only Peterson pipes with the chamber dimensions you want.

Then based on owning both I’d go with the 302. You can always pack less and/or lighter with the 302, and it’s close to the Savinelli you have now. The 303 would work better if you were looking for a shorter duration smoke

I've been doing that. I guess what I'm a bit confused about is what constitutes a "medium" size bowl for a bent apple ? The peterson website describes the 303 as "normal" and the 302 as "bigger" but based on the dimensions they seem smaller than most medium size billiards.

Alright thanks, I will likely get the 302 then. I guess packing less is always an option so that's a pretty good point. I would be a bit bummed to buy it and find it's too small so bigger is safer I guess. I just don't want to end up getting some house/pub monster pipe in XL size lol

You won’t confuse it with a House or Pup pipe. It’s definitely smaller than both of those. I love the 302 I have and it’s one of my pipes I’ll never get rid of
