Someone once asked me why I liked precious metal bands, caps, and so forth on pipes (when it's stylistically appropriate, of course), and I said, "Because silver or gold adds a dash of barbaric splendor... something that's largely missing from life in modern times." I've never been able to further refine or improve on that answer. It's still how I think of it.
Pete's Silver Army Spigot series---the ones that have silver turned over the butt end of the stem in addition to the shank cap---are the best thing out there for silver lovers, imo. Reasonably priced, never have fills (though they might have a few pits/specks), and available in most of their standard numbered shapes.
