I have a very good friend who’s about to retire, and I intend to offer him a bent pipe, possibly a Peterson, as old as i way find it, to match his age. Therefore i’m looking for a pre-1970 pipe.
I came across an add, in a auctions website, offering a nice Peterson Kapruf, shape 65, saying “pre-70’s”. No hallmarks, so… is it possible to tell? I could find a clue on pipedia.
Thanks for any return.

best regards
david

Yes, I read a few pages on the matter, but I could find anything helpful. It seems that there is no way to determine a date of issue, except for hallmarks, series, and so on.
I think the ads I saw was based more on assumptions than facts

Well, there is no way to date Peterson pipes other than Hallmarks. Everything else will only get you to an era, not a specific year. And unfortunately not all silver mounted Petersons even have real hallmarks. For a fairly long period of time Irish made Peterson’s with silver mounts had faux hallmarks while London made and silver mounted Petersons did have actual hallmarks. The only briar pipes that have carried actual date codes across the breadth and width of production are Dunhill’s, outside of that attributing a specific year to most any unmounted briar pipe is nearly impossible.

Some, very obscure way of getting the ballpark is by the stamp mark. There should be some info on it somewhere. But it's mostly a range of years. Not at all precise as Dunhill White Dot dating.
