I purchased this Kinsale via ebay several weeks ago. It was unsmoked, and the photos in the auction did not do the pipe justice. The original asking price was $95. As it sat around for a month or more the price was dropped to $85. I think I offered $70, and my offer was accepted. I believe these sell new for around $130. And I'd say it's a fair price new for this pipe.
I often read that Petersons can be difficult to break in. Not this one. And this one passes a pipe cleaner all the way to the bowl. The only flaw, the draft hole on the P-lip is slightly left of center. And I can live with that.
I tend to pack my pipes loosely, as I find it helps me smoke cooler. And as my tongue is a bit more sensitive than the roof of my mouth, I find that the P-lip is a great choice for me. In fact, all my four Petersons are P-lips - with two being Systems.
This particular model is the XL25. If it were a Sherlock Holmes, I believe it would be the Deerstalker, named for the hat that Holmes wears. It can be clenched, but it's a bit heavy for long stretches. And as I find the egg shape a great fit for my left hand, I much prefer to hold it.
For those of you considering the Kinsale line - I think it's a great alternative to the $250 or so asking price of the Sherlock Holmes line, as long as you don't need the sterling silver.

Great score Andy, i have the exact same pipe (XL25 w/p-lip) except in the smooth finish and it is a fantastic smoker and a great all around pipe. I think i did pay around $130 for it as well, so you got a great deal. Enjoy.

If I'm not mistaken, the Kinsales are the same bowls as the Sherlock Holmes line - the major difference being the silver on the shank and the extra money. If true, then the smooth line should have some very nice grain. The rustication on this model is significantly better than my Petes in the $100 range - so I'm thinking these truly do have the Holmes bowls.

You could very well be right. The MSRP on them is $150 and they are going for $120 right now.

The Sherlocks are going anywhere from $160-$300, depending on finish and ornamentation. That is not a whole heck of a lot more money, so you could be on to something.
Either way, i don't really care, my Kinsale smokes and looks just fine without the silver or pic of a dude with a funny hat smoking a pipe stamped on it. I'll try and remember to post a pic of mine, but yeah it does have some pretty fine grain, especially for the price!

Ah, I see my XL25 is the Strand and not the Deerstalker. Good to know.
