While not technically British, i don't know where else to post this.
I purchased a pipe advertised as a Peterson from the 1950's on eBay. I don't recognize the "P" marooning on the stem. Has anyone seen this type of mark before?

And welcome by the way, this is the right section for Peterson products.
That is a nice Tankard shape. They usually run around 28 to 30 grams in weight, a very nice smoking pipe, so good choice!

That is a standard "P" stem logo for a Republic era pipe.
The close up photo isn't great but the "p" has two tails in a configuration I can't find on any Peterson-related websites.
I did email Peterson, of course, but they never got back to me.

Are those your photos or the photos from the listing? The stamp looks totally legit to me, other than the double tail, but that could be an artifact of the photo. Are you sure it actually looks that way? If it does, it could just be a shoddy stamping job.

Yes, welcome to you! Sure looks right for a Peterson logo.

Don't see why a Pete shouldn't be talked about in this section- it's pretty British, no? (Though some will protest!)

The photos are from the listing. There are two distinct tails on the P. Kind of weird. Also, the model number stamped on the bottom is #8. I can't find any mention of that model in Peterson literature. I'm not saying it's not legit, just oddly absent. Was this a failed model?

It looks like a Pete through-and-through. I'd be happy to own it.
I'm not sure what you mean by "failed," but other than the (maybe) wonky stamping, it's awesome.

Oh, I'm happy to own it. I just meant that maybe it was a model that didn't do well and was removed from the catalog. I suppose "retired model" would have been better.

Peterson still offers a tankard, actually. It's one of their more popular smaller pipes and comes in military mount and push-tennon varieties, I'm pretty sure. I think the only change they've really made to the shape is that the contemporary bowl shape is more of a barrel and isn't canted like yours.

Hey pipesmoking Tom, they let the Irish hang around here. :D Now, I suppose if 1 limits it to pipes headquartered in Britain, than I suppose it wouldn't qualify. Though some of the brands associated with the appellation "British" aren't even headquartered there anymore. Now, if the company were headquartered in Belfast, you could at least claim it was a UK pipe. :)

You could! Just pointing out that Peterson isn't a "British" company. I'm a stickler for proper appellation, I suppose ;) Or, I'm a pedantic a-hole. Probably the latter.

We've had a few lively discussions on the British vs English topic. One so lively that it was closed...

As far as I can determine, Peterson still makes the Tankard and Barrel. The "8" stamped on the pipe of this thread is curious, I've never seen that before.

Yes, but it looks like their older tankards had canted bottoms per the OP photo. I didn't really mean "barrel" in my previous post - really was just referring to squared bottom.

Very well. This is more a "British/English Vs. Irish," though, as Dublin (Republic of Ireland) certainly isn't in Britain. 8)
