I recently purchased a couple of Peterson pipes that had some pretty apparent issues.

I’m a fan of Peterson pipes, and I’m especially fond of the spigot pipes.

While I really haven’t had an issue with any of the Peterson pipes I’ve bought over the last 30 years, it’s a little confusing to me why they wouldn’t be able to notice such apparent flaws as these.

Bought an 03 smooth with an amber stem that wobbled back and forth while the stem was seated. Fitment obviously out of round.

Bought a Pub pipe that was drilled off center, and the draft came in 3/16” below the floor of the bowl...

You’d think that their QC would catch such apparent flaws.

It’s PITA to have to return these. And then your out the return postage. If buying online sight unseen, you’d think at least the vendor would inspect them visually. They take the time to photograph each individual item.

Occasionally I buy from a vendor online called Sweetwater. They deal in musical instruments. They individually inspect items before shipping them out. Once bought a Gibson Les Paul Custom that I fell in love with, and the online pics were great. Then they sent me a notice that they would not be sending that guitar, as they had found flaws in it and would be returning it to the factory. A bit of a let down, but not as bad as getting it and then discovering it myself at a later time.

Not a Pete-bash thread, it’s just disappointing to get something that is messed up and have to go through the time and expense of returning it...AE810A26-DCC2-4EC0-BC02-D4D65AADD3E0.png305B58A3-72CC-4FA8-9E1B-A96F4420D66D.jpeg

That's a shame?, I have a b10 amber spigot and it's a lovely pipe and yours looks beautiful too. I hope you get it sorted out with the vendor.

Online shopping is not friendly for brands with poor QC, or an inconsistent product. It either costs the customer time and expense, or the vendor time and expense to handle inspection requests.
Having had past quality issues with estate buys from the same vendor, I only order offline and when calling them I ask them to do a few inspections such as stem fit and passing a pipe cleaner. They've never let me down with real time QA checks.

In these cases, I always asked to be sent a Pre-Paid Call Tag when I need to return an item for replacement/repair/exchange due to slipshod QC.

If the Customer Service person balks at the suggestion that their company should have to pay the return shipping in order to correct their own mistake, I calmly inform the agent that I understand the position they are telling me that their company takes on the matter of my satisfaction in this transaction; and then, I additionally ask if they are sure they are empowered to make long-term Vendor/Customer Relationship decisions, or, if that requires the authorization of their immediate supervisor.

If the CS agent says they are indeed empowered to make such decisions, I then calmly say: "based on the decision you have made regarding the company's refusal to provide the return shipping fee for the faulty item, I will be forced to return this item for a full refund - with no future business from me to be forthcoming; ever again; but before I do that, let's double-check with your supervisor to be 100% certain that you are indeed empowered to terminate customer relationships on your own personal authority."

That usually gets the CS agent to give up the pre-paid call-tag; or, pass your call to the more reasonably minded supervisor; who just wants you happy and off his phone.

Hope that might work for you too. - Sherm Natman

Without making a count, I believe I have about a dozen Peterson pipes, most of them bought over the last ten years. Even through the quality control reports we all heard, I've never had a problem with any of them. So I ask why would that be? The best I can come up with is, I have never bought above the medium price range, and half of my Petes are low-end for that brand. This makes me wonder if the up-market pipes, like most of their systems pipes and pipes with metal work, are more prone to quality lapses. Any of the complaints I have heard voiced would have ended my purchase of Petes.

I had an unpleasant case with Peterson Killarney pipe. The drill in the shank was too close to the mouthpiece. When I inserted the filter into the mouthpiece and screwed it into the shank, the filter was blocking the hole and the air draft disappeared, when smoking I had to screw up the mouthpiece not completely.

There was also a case when the "Baker Street" mark was missing on the Peterson pipe. It was a a gold mounted pipe and I was buying it for resale. When I noticed a problem I refused to sell it and returned it to the local store.

I had a deluxe system where the airway in the stem did not meet the hole in the p lip. It was like the intersection of a Venn diagram. (I purchased the pipe from a UK tobacconist) First, Laudisi told me I would have to pay $40 for a stem replacement, which they then recanted when I asked why since this was a new pipe and they are the US contact for service. I was not pleased at all at that point and to fix would have taken a month- or months for a stem replacement from laudisi. I ended up paying as much as the pipe (maybe a bit more) for a replacement stem from George Dibos (which is great).

So basically to assure a perfect stem I had to pay double.

Even being a pete fan... I will never, ever, buy another brand new one.

I posted about a a cosmetic QC issue on a different pipe in another thread which was summarily shut down (apparently caution is warranted when discussing forum sponsors). Buying from a reputable outfit like SP does seem to help and I have no complaint with their CS. But I have learned that pipes with problems of varying degrees will get shipped and caveat emptor applies - burden is on the consumer to very carefully inspect on receipt of pipes. I guess that’s the tradeoff for the convenience of online ordering.

I can’t imagine that they would make you pay the postage of mailing the items back. I think they would email you a return slip that you would print and tape on the box. I would email and inquire.
they had me take a picture of the receipt or a scan and send that in and then refunded the money or at least that is what they said. I threw out the receipt but I really trust they would have refunded it. Especially since they asked for it again. That was at S.P..

"Summarily shut down"?? Quite a lot of kvetching in that thread over what many of us consider a small aesthetic matter.
And that you didn't start by trying to sort it out with SP before posting was perhaps another reason Kevin got frosted and deep-sized the thread.

BTW:
You can put your location in your Profile—(please!—because people will forget!) That will save questions in the future as to where you live when you later mention local stores, weather, tobacco prices, availability, regulations, location of photos, wildfires, air quality, etc., etc..
Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. Just country if you must.

It's not drilled high and the draft hole hits the bottom perfectly. What are you complaining about? ?

Will do. The magnitude of a kvetch is a relative thing. But no matter. It isn’t a big deal at the end of the day.
