It's always interesting when a pipe emerges in an unaccustomed context, and so it is when I found a Peterson 10" churchwarden for $168 in the recent J. Peterman catalog. I think I saw it in an earlier catalog once or twice before, but it is a relatively new offering. For those not familiar with it, J. Peterman is a catalog and online vender that offers up-market merchandize always featuring high-fantasy romanticized descriptions describing the exotic sources and locales of the items. The Peterman catalog was roundly satirized in various Seinfeld episodes poking fun at the high-flown nonsense of their sales pitch. Here's a little of the pitch for the pipe: James Joyce smoked a Peterson. So did Mark Twain. As did practically every politician and industrialist. The famous Peterson System. Graduated bore in the mouthpiece makes the suction applied by the smoker 15 times weaker by the time it reaches the tobacco chamber. On this particular shape, extra long length of the mouthpiece ensures the coolest smoke possible. It's made of textured briarwood (looks like tree bark), grown in the Mediterranean. Albert Einstein said, "I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgement in all human affairs."
Well, they have a few things almost right, obviously not targeting the experienced pipe smoker, but a funny read.

Finding a Peterson churchwarden in the J. Peterman catalog may be one of those definite indications that pipe smoking is on the increase. That's a whole audience that may never have considered smoking a pipe before and fancy trying it. Then they'll need some tobacco, a pipe tool, pipe cleaners, another pipe.

I have noticed pipes (Petersons all, I think) in some recent Peterman's catalogs. (Not sure I know why we get it at all. I suspect my lovely bride must have ordered something from them once. But they are entertaining.)
I have wondered about the inclusion of the pipes there. As you say, not where a bona fide pipe smoker would go to buy a pipe. But given they have appeared in several catalogs, I have to presume they sell some.
I don't doubt that most are bought on a whim and smoked a half dozen times, then put away for good. But if it adds a few to our numbers every year, "well done" say I.

Uninitiated pipe purchasers need to get some basic advice on smoking, at a local pipe shop, or here at pipesmagine, or somewhere, to help them get started. As long as they have the sense to get some help, it might be a way in. I think I bought clothing for my wife as a gift and that brings the catalog, but we have long enjoyed looking at the items and mostly reading and often laughing uproariously at the text. Some of it is pretty good in a kitschy way. I'm afraid that is a day job for some fiction writers and poets.

Hey, guys/gals, here's the link to the J.Peterman offering of a Peterson pipe, and the price has gone down from $168 to $124. I like that trend.
