Yesterday I got what I believe to be a good deal on an unused pipe from the Peterson Castle line, the "Malahide" shape in rusticated finish. While the pipe is unused it had obviously sat in the shop for a while, as the silver band was badly tarnished. When I got it home and cleaned it up, I discovered that the hallmarking on the silver band was either badly worn, which doesn't make sense seeing as how the pipe is clearly unsmoked, or it was just a bad stamp to begin with. the .925 is the only section of the hallmark that is legible. Obviously I was hoping to use the hallmark to find out when the pipe was manufactured. Some interwebs research reveals little about the line other than the shapes and finishes that were produced, even Peterson's website only gives this information, and I didn't find it on pipedia either. Anyone more Peterson and/or research savvy than I am have any input on the history of this line?
By the way...this post is useless without pics...beat you to it. :nana:
Cheers,

Gary

Dave,

I'm really not sure, it is certainly a modern production but I don't believe its brand new, perhaps you're thinking of the "Dublin Castle" line? The Castle collection is four pipes named for four famous castles in Ireland, Malahide being one of them. The silver band on this one had considerable age on it, the tobacconist I bought it from said they had the whole set at one point and over time had sold the rest off individually. I did some quick smart-phone research in the store to see if the price was right. They apparently had it at SPC at some point but was not for sale (unfortunately once a pipe is sold their historical listings don't give the sold-for price). The only place I found it for sale was an Italian site that had it listed for 100 euro. Which leads me to believe they are not currently in production, but I can't find the range of years they were produced.

Excellent advice! I'd say I'm a ...smoking collector. Pipes don't tend to stay in an unsmoked condition very long under my roof. It smokes pretty well, open draw, tallish narrow chamber. Handled 2 cubed flakes of HH Old Dark Fired like they were made for each other. With the hallmark in the condition it's in, it's not much of a collectors item.

I'll try to get some clearer macro pics of the hallmark stamp when I get back to my better camera.

The rustication on this pipe is very nice, pics don't quite do it justice.

It was mixed in with a display of Donegal Rockies, the band caught my eye and I got real interested.

I know...definitely not what you expect from a new pipe. Bad stamp from factory I guess. Honestly at the price I paid, even if I had been able to see how bad the hallmark was while at the shop I still would have bought it.

Nice pipe!
Looking at the nomenclature, it's recent, maybe 2008 - 2010. The 2011 and newer vintage Petes have a different Peterson nomenclature ( they have dropped "of Dublin" from the logo ) AFAIK.

Some of the newer Petersons I have say Peterson over Dublin but not Petersons of Dublin.
The Castle series was a limited run and 2008 sounds about rught. I have a friend who completed his collection by ordering pieces from Europe.
