Hey gang,

I’ve been meaning to ask this since my summer hiatus. Before I went on cigar season (just can’t seem to enjoy a pipe in the hot humid summer), there was talk of Peterson’s ‘new’ bowl coatings being so unsavory that some folks were reaming them down to the bare briar and breaking them in from there. Unless I’ve lost my mind (entirely possible), a few folks were discussing this issue here a few months back.

I’d sure like to pick up a new System B42. Not a huge deal as I can get the factory coating off I’m fairly sure but thought I’d ask the forum.

Many thanks.

I picked up an unsmoked Jeckyl & Hyde a few months ago off eBay, but it may have pre-dated the coating change? I always find Peterson’s to have a bit longer of a break-in period than most other manufacturers, but as it’s only a minor inconvenience to me, I just push through. This coating did appear visually to be a bit more substantial, and I even compared it to an unsmoked Dunmore reissue in my collection (2012 or earlier?) and it appeared slightly different. Anyway, wish I could provide better feedback - but if it’s the new coating, it wasn’t a game changer for me.

The bowl coating in my Dracula B10 was fine. I was tempted to use alcohol to remove it but said screw it. I can tell it’s not bare wood, but the coating doesn’t taste horrible. I smoked a few bowls of OJK and then switched to GLP Sixpence with no issues with strange taste. I will say that it has built up cake super fast.

The new coatings are much better than the previous. Off the six Peterson's I have ordered in the past six months (with another on the way), none have had a nasty taste and breaking them in was no problem. They do take a bit of extra cleaning on the first few smokes, mostly due to stain in the shank. However, that has not impacted the taste at all.

I just bought a Peterson b42 which has the "new" coating about a month ago. I have not notice a thing in any of the several bowls I have smoked through it. I will say this, I have smoked several different peterson systems pipe and this shape is my favorite. It is a large heavy bowl. I love how cool the thick walled bowl stays as you smoke it. Not the best pipe for clenching due to weight, but it rest perfectly against my chest when I am kicked back in my recliner. The 42 is a great pipe in my opinion.
