This morning after a medical procedure my wife asked, do you think that 90 year old man will be in his pipe shop yet?

I replied Wayne Davis has likely been there before we got up.:)

You must go to Jon’s Pipe Shop in Downtown Columbia Missouri. Bring cash because Wayne Davis doesn’t take plastic money. He’s actually only 88, and he probably will outlive you, so put this place on your bucket list. He’s been there since 1975 and has a PhD in European History and bought the pipe shop so he could stay around campus. No kidding. It’s a place time forgot.

Davis has a very limited selection of pipes but oh me, oh my, what pipes!

Missouri Meerschaums in Diplomat and Country Gentleman shapes.

And a few dozen reconditioned estate pipes, priced from $35 to $80.

I bought four little cans of GL Pease tobacco for $16.50 each and lusted over the perfect estate pipes.

This Perry was perfect, looked unsmoked, only $80.

These had a unique long stinger that fit tight in the shank and smoke went through holes in a series of discs.

The draft hole is over the first section.

It colored on the first smoke and was made of top shelf briar, likely Algerian. But it’s way good, where ever it was from.

Wayne added up my bill in long hand while he talked about listening to FDR as a child on the radio. It was 150 some dollars and I gave him $160 and my change was a Punch Rare Corojo cigar, his favorite.

God will never subtract a penny from your pile of winnings from money spent at such places.

My Perry has a story behind it, your pipe don’t.:)

I broke it in right there in the shop with 2007 vintage McClelland Arcadia a customer loafing there’s father bought new, and he popped the lid and we enjoyed a smoke while the thermometer went up towards a hundred outside.

We discussed Et in Arcadia Ego

And how was your afternoon?
