There are many advantages for this Octagenian. On the home front feigned forgetfulness helps avoid marital discord when not completing job 57 assigned by the wife. You can dial the hearing aid to selective mode so others do not irritate. When in public I can take advantage of finding a parking space signed to the disabled. Doors are opened by those younger. I can oggle or even comment to a female about how well she looks. Using a motorized shopping cart in a store can be fun: clears the isle with a gental nudge to broad ass women blocking same or knocking over the boxes of new items in the way. The watch is no longer required for being on time when retired. I could go on an on but never get drepresed when hearing the old phrase there is no future of growin old !

That won't work in my town. Unless you have a sticker, you'll get a ticket... no matter how old you are.

But, good to hear that you are finding the positives. People will also tend to give me a pass for keeping a pipe in my clench while I run into a store for a few things. That is also the benefit of always keeping a pipe in clench, even after the pipe has finished. Just let everyone always see a pipe in your mouth, and you can go anywhere with it.

I have a large plastic sign that must be mounted on the rear view mirror, has a warning requiring removal while driving. Quite a hassle to get approval from a doctor, the reception person was confused and insisted on sending to DMV for marked plates. The dated sign is issued by the town clerk was my preference. Still do not like to be identified as such with limited disability, often get the stare when walking well for a short distance. I guess this is a negative instead of a perk .

I went into my doctor and requested a Handicapped sign and was shocked at what he said. He said you have to have a real handicap to get one so he wouldn't do it. What the hell. I was so shocked by what he said I didn't argue. There are guys who are thirty years younger than me who have one and they literally run into the store. Talk about a "crap on a cracker" deal.

One of my uncle who is a retired doctor once refused handicap tag. Death threats for months. Funny thing is, it's a small town and everyone knows everyone. And he has been the doctor for most people under 40 since they were new borns.

Not every handicap is visible.
