I love the Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake, I think it is great. It was the first Va/Per I tried and is probably still my favorite. Mild, sweet, easy smoking stuff.

I bought some other blends in this category and tried them. One of those was Bayou Morning. When I smoke this, it seems like someone has just ground frpepper into the jar of tobacco.

There are some other blends that have perique that taste very peppery to me as well. Other times I get a bit of the raisin/fig flavor.

What is the difference? Is it the amount of perique in the blend?
is the actual perique just different? Is it the other tobaccos in the blends that make it seem more black peppery?

The amount is definitely a factor. Bayou Morning is 20% perique. Luxury Navy Flake is 10% at most. Luxury Navy Flake also has a light sugar water topping.

Perique will get fruitier with time in a jar, and will be more peppery if smoked fast. I only smoke it when I'm confident I can achieve a slow, cool smoke.

Also, I couldn't even smoke Bayou Morning until it had 3 months in the jar. The tin not made my living room uninhabitable. You've certainly got a much stronger stomach than I, sir ?

With Bayou Morning, I am not so certain that it is the perique that changes, but possibly just the Virginias and that touch of burley in there. A few years in storage shaves off that harshness on the throat.

But, lately my taste for perique in general has shifted. I much prefer a straight Virginia now.

My stomach is strong because I keep a layer of fat around it!

I do like BM, but yeah... the wife does not care for the barnyard smell when I open the jar.

It's more a case of blending. I smoked some samples that where straight VaPer where my current favorite VaPer is Ascanian #2 with 10% perique that also has a tinge of Orientals. The straight VaPer's weren't as "rich" as Ascanian which I attribute to the % perique and the orientals in it, I also didnt get the spice from others a lot.

I have a tin of HU Janneman flake which is a red viriginia and perique. Quite curious how that turns out, HU has a reputation on virginia's and even more curious how red virginia's with their acidity work with the perique spice. Not I expect smoking ketchup with spices, but most are bright virginias.

I'm finding that I prefer straight VA over VaPer, although I will say that I'm enjoying blends that have a light amount of perique if it is more on the fruit taste side rather than the spice side as it adds another dimension to the taste of the tobacco. I'm not a fan of tobaccos that have a large amount of peppery perique in them because to my taste it overpowers the other tobacco(s).

As a large American, I believe mine is just muscle in a relaxed state.

Perique certainly interacts with VA. Even in the same blend it can come across differently at different times.

I love Jannemans flake. Just finished a bowl a little bit ago.
I have a ton of it in the cellar and I can't wait to try it with some years on it.
Every time I smoke some I have to talk myself down from ordering more.
