Our featured interview on tonight’s Pipes Magazine Radio Show is with Per Billhäll. Per is the owner of Scandinavian Pipes, which is an online retailer of high grade pipes. He started smoking pipes in the 1960s. His first high grade pipe was made by Hans “Former” Nielsen, who is one of the living legends from Denmark. That led to Per becoming a huge pipe and tobacco collector, and show attendee where he became well known. Along with pipe book author Jan Andersson, they started The Pipe Club of Sweden in 1991. Then in 1999, Per started “Scan Pipes”. He is now one of the pipe retailing legends from Sweden. At the top of the show Brian will talk about holiday blends, and other special pipe tobacco blends.

The show airs every Tuesday at 8:00pm eastern US time, and can be found at PipesMagazine.com and all podcast apps.

The remodel work isn’t a lot of fun, but it is nice seeing the house look better. Luckily most of the remodel work we needed to do on our new house is done with.

My favorite holiday blend was the Peterson Holiday Season. The tins were so creatively designed with festive scenes and the blends were always good high quality aromatics. I also used to enjoy McClelland’s Holiday Spirit. I was just getting into a habit of buying a few tins of Cringle Flake to start a tradition of having a tin at Christmas time, sadly that won’t be a tradition for long.

I want to say thanks to Per for confessing to having 1,200 pipes at one point. Now my wife can’t nag me so much about the 75 I currently have. That had to have been fun to be there for the early years of the Danish greats. In the 15yrs I’ve been in the hobby it’s been fun to see newer carvers emerge and forge friendships with them at pipe shows.

Hope the holidays are going well for you Brian.

Pipe on!

I really enjoyed this interview, especially the Bo Nordh stories. It’s neat to hear an early collector (and Per Billhäll was a collector before becoming a retailer) talk about the hobby and prices of high-end Danish pipes 25 years ago In the early days of internet retailing.
