Title says it all. This is my first tamper ever (Edit: I mean the first I made). I had the top part of a broken Cross desk pen. I turned it into a tamper. I like it actually.

I put a threaded insert into the body and then put the screw. I used a metal seal because I didn't know how well the body of the pen would stand in heat.

Update: I didn't like the look of the metal seal on the first tamper and I removed it. Then I remembered another broken pen, and made a second tamper with it too.

Recycled and re-purposed! You are saving the planet! (And for a great and worthy cause!) Hurrah!

jerwynn: I care about the environment, but this wasn't about it actually. I wanted to use a tamper looking better, and I like to make my own stuff, if I can. I'm a DIY guy mostly.
But I didn't have the tools to make a "proper" tamper, so I repurposed some pen parts.
Edit: They look better than a simple nail, don't they?

Looks very stylish. You seem to have removed a washer on the gold-toned tamper, which is a good idea. Looks like it might have imparted some fumes to the ember. Now it looks like only metal in contact with the fire. Should work well.

I also use this little screwdriver as my pick. I don't use a reamer, because I'm not a cake builder. And I don't like those Czech tools and all-in-one tools similar to them.

I like it!
Just started smoking a pipe and already decided you're not a cake builder? I think you'll find you'll end up on the right side of history, there

Haha! You're right that I'm a novice, but I know I'm not a cake builder, because I clean the chamber after every smoke. Not too much of course, but enough to avoid too much cake. I don't like the idea of reaming the cake.

Thank you jndyer! I like how they feel in the hand too. Not too heavy, just heavy enough.

Another tamper from a pen part. This one doesn't look as nice as others, but it can be hung in a shirt pocket. And it's kinda heavier.

New ones. Two made from nuts and bolts, and two made from parts of two unused drawer handles.

Maybe professional tamper makers should take it into consideration. Pen clips are easy to find and cheap. I'd like a nicely made tamper with a clip.

New tamper from a pen part. Same concept, except that it has a pick on the top with a cap. Although the cap is tight enough, it might not be very safe to carry in a pocket. The pick is pretty blunt though.

Edit: I decided to make this after I heard the praises for pipe nails. I wanted to make it multifunctional. But it could be better.

Very cool stuff you've got going here! The clipped one is my favorite as well, especially with what I perceive to be extra surface area on the foot of the tamper compared to some of the others. I love the resourcefulness and "found objects" style of them all.
