Just read the news that Pelé has died.

Like Muhammad Ali he transcended the sport that made him famous. Even if you didn't follow football you knew who Pelé was. Won three World Cups with Brazil. Three! Absolute legend.

I watched him play on the television and three times in person when he played for the New York Cosmos.

The highlight was when he matched up against Eusebio in 1977 here in Las Vegas.

As a young man who lived and breathed soccer it was a great day!!

Well…shit. I knew of him by name and then saw him in the movie Victory. I didn’t get into futbol until after high school when I served overseas and learned from the locals. The sport was really looked down on where I grew up.

I had the same experience, although in my case the home team was the Seattle Sounders. On Pele’s first game in Seattle he was new to the NASL and the Cosmos were still a mess. He looked like a traffic cop directing where the other players should be and what they should be doing. Still it was an amazing opportunity to see a legend in person.

A few years ago I saw a great documentary called "Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos"

Looks like someone has uploaded it to YouTube. Think I'll watch it again.
