Ok all you Pegasus lovers, I just got a one OZ sample of Pegasus to try from an online retailer and it is rather dry so I am in the process of rehydrating it to try, I am curious how it will compare to Sir Walter Raleigh regular as I really like it. I am become more fond of burley blends and I’d like a good bulk blend to stock as well as Sir Walter.

Matches860, in his review of Pegasus said it best.

To paraphrase from memory, John opined that he can see where a new smoker wouldn’t “get” Pegasus. Might dismiss it. Not understand it. May find it bland and wonder what the fuss is about. — But what Bob Runowski attempted was not to mimic Bond Street but to focus on the interplay of the tobaccos. In this Bob was a master whom understood perfectly how each leaf would interact with the other and to those who can perceive this interplay of flavors, especially those who love burley, Pegasus is a true masterpiece.

Me talking now —SWR is a classic codger burley and the blender of Pegasus did seek to create an old time American blend that could be considered a quintessential example of a classic, all day, American burley blend. In this I feel he knocked it out of the park. So far out of the park that it’s hard to compare a Pegasus home-run circling of the bases to a runner sliding safely into second which is SWR.

Sorry for the baseball analogy to those who don’t know the game.

SWR doesn't do much for me (yet); however, my preferences in tasting change.

I do enjoy Pegasus quite a bit, but Old Joe Krantz Blue beats Pegasus. Interesting for me, I rate OJK Blue number 1 among Burley blends for me, with several from Watch City following.

Thanks for the comparing and contrasting thread between these two tobaccos. I've enjoyed everyone's comments.
kindly,
mike

Marconi,
You’re not the first to prefer OJK Blue over Pegasus. Even @ray47 has similar praise of the blue label.

In fact, I ordered a 2 ounce tin based on reviews of Old Joe Blue Label comparing it to Pegasus. — It’s yet unopened and something I am really looking forward to trying.

It’ll have to wait until I finish my Big n Burley, Haunted Bookshop, Briar Fox and Burley Flake #2 which are taking me much time to get through.

I can’t justify cracking the OJK Blue…. Yet.

Side note: Of the above…. I don’t care for HB. Not a fan of BnB either. Briar Fox was interesting… but Burley Flake #2 hit the spot! — so you know where my tastes lay. If Blue is like Pegasus, I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it!

OP- I feel that each of the classic American OTC’s can become someone’s personal favorite. If they like this genre of mild burley, one is going to deliver. For me it’s Granger. Nothing will ever taste as good to me as an everyday. I’m certain SWR is a fav of many or it wouldn’t be around for a 100 years. I get a spicy, sweet one note taste from SWR, it’s just not a fav of mine. A good blend.

I will say it best now: Pegasus is a bland atrocity against humanity. I would know. I’m a 17th generation pipe tobacco blender.

I just don't have it in my rotation because I don't gravitate towards Cavendish in blends
There is very little Cavendish in this one, and it is an unflavored one, used to just smooth out the blend a tad.
I had gotten used to smoking this aged, until I mistakenly opened a fresh tin. And, fresh it is still tad more harsh than I prefer. But, it is still very good.

The two blends are pretty different. C&D took burley to a new level as a blending leaf, so their burley blends are treated as Virginia is treated in its more complex and refined iterations. SWR is a nice robust burley blend, considerably stronger than Velvet to my taste. But I'd approach Pegasus as a premium blend, mild but nuanced. I like them both. But they're nothing alike.

It's interesting, when I or someone else criticizes Sutliff, we get pounded for being Sutliff haters, (same with Peterson fans) even thought there are one or two Sutliff products that I can tolerate and do smoke occasionally.

But, C&D fans just have so much class that we let these types of comments slide. Good for you for stating your repulsion for this. We realize that not everyone will agree on what is good or not.

Now, if we can get Sutliff and Peterson fans to become more open-minded. But, there's just no hope for the cob smokers. They are a lost cause. puffy

Sutliff is excellent besides their aros.

C&D may have like 5 good blends but no one can tell the trees from the forest. Just like Dan Tobac, I haven’t found hardly anything from C&D worthy of my time or pipes.

everyone has different tastes. I’m sure there is one guy super hard on C&D and Dan at the same time. Three way
