I was wondering about this the other day, and thought I would pose the question here:

It used to be common upon the birth of a new kid, that the Dad would pass out cigars. I did this for all of my kid’s births. I usually had a mix of real cigars and also chocolate or bubblegum ones to give kids (and females).

I figured our Pipe Forums here would be a LIKELY place to find at least some young Dads who may still do this, even though I suspect for most of society it is no longer done.

So…. for those of you who have had kids recently….. did you continue this once common tradition?

I didn’t continue this tradition when my kids were born but I do think it’s a fun tradition to have. It was only my wife and I at the births and no one in the waiting room so no real point for me.
I do remember my dad having a very stale cigar in his sock drawer that said “it’s a boy” on the wrapper. I smoked it when I was a kid and it tasted like a sock drawer cigar.

I think most people now, at least people in my rather large circle will just buy a box with the date code corresponding to the kids birth, easier to do with Cubans, then every year on his / her birthday smoke a cigar out of that box and when the kid is 18 smoke one with the kid if they want, that gives you 17 yrs (for a 25 count box) of single sticks then from 18 on that's 4 yrs where you can share a stick from the box with your kid.

I see more for weddings (well herfs really) but common for weddings, one good box for people you know smoke and enjoy cigars and then something a couple levels down for those that want to have a cigar to look cool in pics and then toss it.

I did. I bought the Alec Bradley box that allows you to put a picture of your own on it.

I was pretty sure I posted about it here but I can't find it.

I handed out cigars at work and to my friends to celebrate the birth of my boys and now to friends and guys at the shop to celebrate my grandchildren. I have birth year Dunhill's and Castello's in honor of my boys and I've got birth year Castello's for my grands! Mrslax even encouraged the grand kids pipes. That's the first time she's ever been happy about me spending money on pipes.

With my first two I bought a box of cigars and passed them out to anyone who wanted one. With the last two I didn't. The anti-smoking nazis would just drive me crazy.

I did for most of my kids. I saw some cheap gas station cigars with It's A [Gender] in pink/blue at our local chain. I grabbed a box of those in the appropriate color, and a box of Rocky Patels for friends. The clerk was cool though, he gave me a bunch of It's a Girl bands to put on the Patels.

I don't think people do that anymore. And honestly, that's fine. Kids are very expensive, cigars as well. If a new dad wants to cut into his fine tobacco budget for the associated costs of a child, that makes sense to me. And I'll go one further and get him a decent stick.
