As always, briar dictates terms, so a few pits here and there and so decided to rusticate.

Beautiful! Nice work. I like how you chose not to rusticate the upper portion of the bowl. The contrast is very nice to look at.

I bet that has a great hand feel. Love the old school look of the rusitcation, it reminds me of old woodies.

I love the shape, very nice. The rustication is unique. Had I the money, I would buy one. :)

That pipe is really, really nice overall. The rustication is excellent; it flows very well with the shape of the pipe.

Truly unique. Very nice artistic choices in working with the briar's characteristics.

I love the grain, so I'm slightly disappointed by the Rustication,(I'm a smooth biased guy) but you did a great job on it!

Pretty neat.
Did you use a small rotary bit or a gouge? I would like to try something like this on an old junker pipe. (I've seen a similar technique used to mimic the galleries & tracks of engraver beetles).

Thanks folks

didimauw, I prefer smooth as well but this chunk of briar was so beat up and pitted it was either rusticate or toss. I hate wasting briar, so I went with rusticate.

cossackjack, the picture below is the Dremel bit I used on this one.

Great looking pipe. You have been getting pretty good at constructing pipes lately. Any plans to take this beyond a fun hobby?

Northernneil, Hiya there!

I think every person who buys an initial pipe making kit of any sort fantasizes about the idea of making pipes and selling them. Maybe not for a living but still, selling them. So far I'm enjoying the process and learning. Will I ever get beyond making shop pipes? I'm hoping so, but only time will tell. I don't really have any equipment yet, just a drill press or even a belt sander other than a 4"x36" CTC bench sander. I guess I will have to cross the 'should I buy a lathe' bridge sooner or later. Even a wood lathe is several hundred dollars so (well I've more or less selected one from KMS tools) I'm waiting to see. I guess I'll know inside when that point is reached if it is ever reached. Does that answer sufficiently for you?
