Just watched the local news, a Baylor doctor was talking about the 10 yr study about Parkinsons, and the GOOD benefits of nicotine. The story was released May 9 CBS Google it for details.

IMO, one of the real reasons for the relentless pursuit of the criminalization of tobacco is the pharmaceutical cartel desires monopolistic control over the use of nicotine.

The political and commercial issues aside, I've also heard that one study has shown that nicotine has

some beneficial effects on neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimers. But one study on either disease --

Parkinson's or Alzheimers -- does not a scientific proof make. All kinds of preventative regimens and

curative regimes look good in studies but do not hold up in animal studies or clinical trials. I suspect

the principal health benefit of pipe smoking, if any, is the relaxation ritual that goes with it. It's difficult

for people to gear down, and smoking a pipe is one way they can make a habit of it. It is a sort of

meditation for people who wouldn't have any patience with the idea of meditation (and a few who do).

With ya on that Brian. Now the local doctor did say you get the best nicotine by eating red, green etc. peppers, and tomatoes. NEVER cigarette, however when asked about cigars, he ignored the question somewhat, and pushed the pepper, tomato way to go.

When I was a kid in the early 50's, doctors actually prescribed cigarettes for my mom's broncitis. She smoked for over 40 years before quitting. (She said that she'd be damned if she was going to pay Washington state taxes.) By the way, she's 89 in July and enjoys good health.

I remember reading something Bertrand Russell wrote about how all his friends who didn't smoke, who were in their 80s, were senile, but the pipe smokers of the same age, were as lucid as ever. Of course, we all know he made it to a lucid 98.
