Anyone ever noticed that a sure sign that you are about to buy another pipe is reaching the firm decision that you have enough pipes, too many pipes, really don't want to buy another pipe, and will now buy only tobacco. It's that estate pipe that you saw on SP, or that one that has been too long at your local B&M pipe shop, working on your subconscious. No more pipes!

Far too many pipes, far too little tobacco... why even buy more pipes?

It is the calm before the storm indeed, as I usually end up going crazy with orders after such a short phase of sanity.

I’m much more a tobacco guy than a pipe guy, the TAD is my arch-enemy, but I am admittedly a sucker for some of SP’s pipe sales. Sometimes they’re just too good to pass up.

If I traded in all the pipes I have bought, I'd still have a large rotation from gifts, plenty to smoke in rotation for a month or more without smoking the same pipe twice.

Sometimes I’m my own worst enemy. I had just decided to take a bit of a TAD break, when I received an alert email I had signed up for myself, months ago. Wessex Campaign Dark Flake came from nowhere and knocked me right off the wagon.

I’m pretty much always sure I don’t need any more pipes. And I’m pretty much always looking at them anyway.

I've said that too many times. So far I've failed every time. As my consolation prize, I have another pipe.

Funny though, when I think about culling the herd, trading in five for credit on an up-market pipe, parting with any of them seems too hard. A lot of careful shopping and "deep" deliberation goes into even the low-end pipes. Then all the gift pipes, can't part with them, some of which are nicer than the ones I buy. So it goes, and such is life.

Yeah, I am a habitual hard relapser. I will not buy anything for a couple months, but once I decide to buy a pipe again, 2 weeks go by, a slew of pipes get ordered and I don't even remember what happened.

Hahaha, I attempted to do this a couple months back. I sorted through my 60 or 70 pipes and came up with maybe 2 I could part with. Then realized the money I would get for them was hardly worth the effort. It's hard when you can remember the through process behind acquiring it and a few memorable smokes.

Yep if trading in it’s better to buy the pipe knowing you’re going to sell it or trade it. Then you get it and man it’s pretty nice. Maybe I shouldn’t sell this one? ?

I mainly go after unusual Savinellis for my yachtsman collection, and Bruce Weaver pieces. I threw out over 140 pipes last year to focus more on them. I do have a couple of artisan friends I buy from, and have recently made acquaintance with Frank Johnson and he's making me one of his 357 poker pipes.

chasing', do you just discard them? Don't you want store credit at SP or somewhere and get something for them? You could get blends, to add to your spare supply (joking).

Strangely I find my strongest PAD impulses surge shortly after purchasing a pipe. I’ll have one on the way and the excitement of it gets me all in a lather.
So I’ve got this Kyriazanos commission on its way from Greece. It will likely take a little while to arrive.

Meanwhile, there’s been a Wojtek Pastuch pipe at The Danish Pipe Shop for months that I’ve been eyeing. It just went on sale so.. I don’t think I really had a choice in the matter.

I'm at a point where I have specific requirements for a new pipe to add to my collection even though I can't necessarily articulate the requirements. I collect a few specific brands and then artisan pieces. Brand name stuff tends to need to be more classical pipe shape while I like funky artisan stuff.

Given my requirements and what I already have in my base collection, it's not that often something pops up that I would like to add to my collection. The exception being there is some really pricey stuff that I'm not going to pony up for.

Unfortunately, a few pipes I'd like to have are in another country and a little more than I'd like to spend on them, especially considering currency exchange rates. If circumstances change and they're still available in the future I might grab them though.

I did just buy 3 new pipes this week and I have my eye on a fourth one though...

I realised I didn’t have an Oom Paul after some scotch last week and found one on eBay. Came in the mail yesterday and it’s a doozy.
