How would you guys go about packing half a bowl of tobacco? I've started out using the Frank method for full bowls, but I find my pipe smoking skills aren't all up to scratch yet to get me through a full bowl. Looking to smoke some more half bowls to get used to smoking without wasting tobacco. Cheers :)

What pipe are you smoking? Maybe you're trying a large one, which can be harder to smoke an entire bowl if you're a beginner. Even if that's not the case, I wouldn't complain too much about it. You'll get used to it. The blend you're smoking can also be more challenging for someone who's just starting with a pipe. It's a matter of finding what you're comfortable with.

Do you happen to know the chamber size of your particular pipe ? B42s run 19-21mm wide and 39-43mm deep. That is on the smaller side of a larger pipe or the larger side of a medium pipe. You can load 1/2 bowls occasional to shorten your smoking time ... either loading the bottom half or wadding the tobacco up top and leaving an air pocket on the bottom. Its your pipe so find what is comfortable for you. Trial and error are the way. I frequently load less tobacco when I want a quicker smoke with no downside. Good Luck.

I think this is smart.
In my estimation, you could either support the tobacco from below or simply not pack as high up.
Maybe try some kind of screen half way down the bowl to rest the tobacco on when packing?
That way you’ll get lots of air under it which may or may not be a good thing depending on your cadence. Of course too much air plus quick puffing can make for a hot, flavorless smoke.

You could also try not packing as high.
You might need a match to be able to get the flame where it needs to go though. Or not.

Best of luck. Let us know what you choose and how it goes for you.

EDIT:
Try smaller, shallower bowls.

From the website it says it's 21mm wide and 45mm deep. I hadn't heard of wadding the tobacco up top, thanks for the advice! I'll try that aswell as the gravity method suggested by renfield and seanv.

Stuff some in the pipe, push it down with your finger. Apply Flake, puff. When lit adjust with the tamper to correct the tamping to you have it where you like it. Don't over think it.

Why are you wasting tobacco if you start with a full bowl?

OR you can get a small(er) pipe for times when you just want a 15-20min smoke.
Lots of small pipes around - both cobs and briars.

Both this clay and porcelain have small chambers

As does the top bulldog and the top 2 princes

Operas are perfect for short smokes

Spoiled for choice.
AND satisfies your PAD 😁

Choice of tobacco also affects the length of the smoke - a shag cut will smoke a lot shorter than flake or plug

While it is an added expense, using a handful of meerschaum chips or Nording Keystones will save on tobacco, reduce dottle and gurgle.

That's Airbus A380 hangar sized chamber, to me. I have a couple like that but seldom smoke them - 18mm x 25mm is more my thing and I smoke to the last. I also have a couple with narrow chambers but way too deep - I put mesh basket screens in those and they're fine like that.

Big chambers are ok with ribbon cuts, but you better love the blends else boredom can set in.

Most of mine tend to be "standard/average" size at about 18-21 x 30-35 mm (.78-.82 x 1.2-1.4 inches). They all average about 45 min, but can be anywhere from 30 min to 1 hour depending what tobacco and how I am smoking.

To the OP, you can just let the pipe go out halfway (might have to choke it off, just put a pipe cleaner in the stem and cover the bowl, or you can touch a metal tamper to the tobacco without drawing and it'll act like a heat-sink to take away heat and block some air) and then come back and finish it later. That's maybe less ideal than only filling halfway, as some tobaccos might taste stale when you return, depending how long it's been.

If your current method of filling works for you, just do that same method but without going as high. If it ends up over-packed, you can turn it over and gently bump it on your palm to loosen, and if it's under-packed, your first few tamps should straighten that out.

The key thing is to not worry and overthink it, it's not rocket surgery.

Pack you would normally and then stop at the half way point. But there is a difference from a full bowl for me. When I pack a full bowl the tobacco goes in a steady stream until full. The first tobacco in is looser and there's a bit of gap left at the bottom of the bowl. This allows better airflow and as it's smoked down and tamped the bowl won't get plugged up reducing airflow also giving the ash more space. However when I'm packing a half bowl I pack it a bit tighter from the get go with almost no gap at the bottom. Less ash and less tamping when only a half bowl is made. That's my method.

Pots are great for shallow bowls. Savinelli makes a 316, among others, that I have several of. One of my favorites for 45 min to an hour bowl. Rossi has a 8316 - same shape, just lower cost. Check those out.
