I just picked up a peterson tankard as my first peterson if I dont like the p-lip can I get a different steam? Also the bowl being black is that a pre-carbon from the factory so you dont have to break it in? Last what is the pre-carbon made of?

You can get any pipe re-stemmed for around 20 bucks or so. Most likely the black in the bowl is pre-carbon . What it is varies with manufacturers. A common recipe used by some custom makers is a combination of plain yogurt buttermilk and powdered charcoal.

Do give the P-lip a fair try....While I don't prefer it, I find that gives me a nice alternative if I have a bit of tongue irritation.

Hard to believe id be so confused by something so simple. What's the flat spot for ? Is the bottom ridge for your teeth ? Or should one lip it like a pony.....makes me apreciate the fish tail....

The flat spot is where one places the tongue. It helps prevent saliva from draining back into the pipe and causing a gurgle.

The black substance in the bowl is a pre-carbon and allows one to forego the normal break-in of 1/4 bowl, 1/2 bowl, 3/4 bowl then a fill. As Unclearthur said, different manufactures use different formulae but the basic one is yogurt and powdered carbon. There is even one fellow I know that uses grape jelly and dry, powdered tobacco.

Howard Schulte is a very nice guy. Hes the main pipe repair man for the tobacco shop here in Jacksonville I go to and has always did an awesome job. I did the opposite and got 2 additional p-lips for my Shannon's.

Following the white rabbit
It took me a while to get used to a Plip, but once I did I find them to be ok. I still prefer a fishtail, but the Plip doesn't bother any more.
As already mentioned, one can order a fishtail for any Peterson pipe.
