I decided to give the "grab bag" a try... I was pleasantly surprised with the variety and quality of the pipes. I tried to research the deal before I purchased it, but I couldn't find any comments on them. They are greek briars marked as "Factory Seconds".
If the topic gains interest I would be happy to post pictures of the pipes I received
(these are my first briars & I will not know what a "good" pipe is till I can afford to purchase some name brands... sorry)

No guarantees, but I think you'll be well satisfied. Many lower priced pipes are well manufactured,

use good quality aged briar, and will last for many years. There are occasional quality problems, but

I would expect good pipes from P&C, since they are interested in encouraging pipe smokers and want

you to have an enjoyable time and continue to be a customer. There wouldn't be much benefit in their

sending you pipes that would only annoy and discourage you in pipe smoking, plus they're good pipe

people and wouldn't do that on principle, I don't think. Break them in carefully and enjoy the experience.

One or two might smoke better than the other(s), but that's usually true between three pipes. These

could be from the PTM Amadeus company, which makes both mass produced pipes and higher-level

pipes. Greek briar is usually high quality and properly aged. Two of my oldest pipes were bought as

unfinished Savenellis, one a second and the other stamped with their logo. They're still smoking strong.

Those are my first briars & tinned tobacco-- I am blown away by all of them! I have already made my wish list tins for my next paycheck. The only one that I wasn't completely satisfied with is the Sutliff Molto Dolce. I started out on aro's, but I am reaching for them less & less. If anyone wants to trade(tin opened 4/5/14) w/ 2 bowls used), I would like to try any non-aro.

Nice looking trio of pipes! I'd say you did well for your first pipe purchase. And the tobaccos...well you can't go wrong there. A little trick I learned back in the day (1968) when I started smoking pipes was to moisten a finger with a good quality high proof whiskey or vodka and completely coat the inside of the bowl of each pipe before smoking it for the first time. It may help to break it in. I have even used a very small amount of good quality honey on my pinky and completely coat the inside of the bowl before smoking for the first time. Even if you have smoked them you can still do this. Then, after each smoke, and smoke them all the way to the bottom, take the pipe securely in your hand and cover the top of he bowl while it is still warm and shake the dottle up and down coating the inside of the bowl with a thin film of tobacco ash. Gently empty the dottle out and then DON'T blow out of the stem right away.t the pipe sit for a few hours to cool down. The remaining ash will over time develop a nice even cake inside the bowl. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. The main thing is HAVE FUN and ENJOY your pipes in a relaxed atmosphere and you will get a lot of enjoyment from them.

Good luck and keep on puffing (slowly)

Thanks, my wife has a jar of natural farm honey from when she worked at the apple orchard. I will use the honey in one & use some SoCo in the other. Thanks for the suggestions!
