WOW!!!
:!: :!:
I must have been outta town and offline when this was posted because I somehow missed it,
this is orgasmland for me!
The Orlik Dugout is one of the grails of which I seek, mostly because they're early examples of sandblasting, and the blast on this old boy is truly topshelf, the tight graining would seem to indicate it was a really nice old root from whence it came.
Most excellent resto work Al!
Thanks for sharing, I really loved the blog post too, especially the old catalog image.
Dugouts seem to be exceedingly scarce, Worthpoint lists exactly 7 pipes as being sold via eBay, Jon's is on there as well as the ratty tatty prince w/ missing silverwork that I overpaid for!
So,
2 of those 7 belong to forum members right here!
I think most of them have been smoked to death or tossed out, the rate of attrition seems very high as ain't many around --- they seem to be undervalued even by English pipe collectors and seem to be under the radar...
...this example looks a little later and the stain is a bit odd:

...but,
it sold for less than $10!!!!!

I was also glad to see Steve Laug dig out his example as it's very interesting because it has an old orific stem that lacks the O logo as does mine...

I like the fact also that they were cased, indicating that at that time the sandblast finish wasn't regarded as a flawed pipe with inferior wood (which seemed to be the perception during the post-war years amongst the public) and the finish must've been earthshatteringly novel back then, although of course there had been rusticated pipes, something about a blast, especially the old English gnarly deep sort, is sublimely magical.
Good stuff.
Great to see a Dugout!!!!!
