So back when I first started smoking, I started out with a pouch of Captain Black Black Label (basically Lane BCA I now know), then I switched to MacBarrens of some kind, then going back to CB, this time in the original white label variety.
My taste was underdeveloped, and I couldn’t really appreciate the subtleties of tobacco yet, at the time I liked the MacBarren‘s best despite its bite, figuring that since it was in a tin it must be superio, and found the CB white to be easier to smoke but lighter In its flavor.
From there, I quickly moved to some more interesting blends, including Lane HGL, Sutliff 504c, some VA flakes, MacBarren Plumcake, and then English blends like Sutliff match 20, Balkan Sobranie, and others.
Recently however I was smoking my Balkan Sobranie original mixture match in the living room, and my wife pointed out that although she doesn’t mind my smoking, and even enjoys the aroma (sometimes even asking for a taste of blends she likes the smell of), the Latakia heavy blends were getting a bit overwhelming indoors.
In the interest of domes tranquility, and spending quality time while still enjoying my pipe (I especially enjoy smoking during family movie nights and such) I set out to find a better indoor blend that wouldn’t be as intense for those around me.
Remembering back to the old CB white I used to enjoy, I have gone ahead and ordered half a pound of Lane RLP-6.
regardless of the arguments about whether it is exactly the same blend, it’s almost universally accepted that the RLP burns better, and leaves less goop behind, while still smelling pleasant, and providing a light but satisfying smoke.
I‘m looking forward to enjoying some as soon as it arrives, and hopefully my taste has developed more in the past years that I can experience more of the subtitles of a classic aromatic.
