So back when I first started smoking, I started out with a pouch of Captain Black Black Label (basically Lane BCA I now know), then I switched to MacBarrens of some kind, then going back to CB, this time in the original white label variety.
My taste was underdeveloped, and I couldn’t really appreciate the subtleties of tobacco yet, at the time I liked the MacBarren‘s best despite its bite, figuring that since it was in a tin it must be superio, and found the CB white to be easier to smoke but lighter In its flavor.
From there, I quickly moved to some more interesting blends, including Lane HGL, Sutliff 504c, some VA flakes, MacBarren Plumcake, and then English blends like Sutliff match 20, Balkan Sobranie, and others.
Recently however I was smoking my Balkan Sobranie original mixture match in the living room, and my wife pointed out that although she doesn’t mind my smoking, and even enjoys the aroma (sometimes even asking for a taste of blends she likes the smell of), the Latakia heavy blends were getting a bit overwhelming indoors.
In the interest of domes tranquility, and spending quality time while still enjoying my pipe (I especially enjoy smoking during family movie nights and such) I set out to find a better indoor blend that wouldn’t be as intense for those around me.
Remembering back to the old CB white I used to enjoy, I have gone ahead and ordered half a pound of Lane RLP-6.
regardless of the arguments about whether it is exactly the same blend, it’s almost universally accepted that the RLP burns better, and leaves less goop behind, while still smelling pleasant, and providing a light but satisfying smoke.
I‘m looking forward to enjoying some as soon as it arrives, and hopefully my taste has developed more in the past years that I can experience more of the subtitles of a classic aromatic.

Definite RLP6 is good family style tobacco. I often pull out some 7 seas black, sutliff vanilla custard, sutliff creme brulee/molto dolce (same thing), d54 or even some cherry stuff like sut black cordial or Boswell PDT which wife loves. No one loves my VA flakes, vaper, burleys, or any English stuff. Its family repellant for when I need to be relaxing alone on the back deck.

It was the aroma of these classics that got me interested in pipe smoking in the first place. Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy smoking them as much as I enjoy smelling them but there are quite a few aromatics that I do enjoy. If I am in need of a crowd pleaser, I usually smoke Autumn Evening that I’ve cut 50/50 with Brown Bogie. Gives off the great aroma and I get the warmth of the bold flavors and nicotine. They work really well together.

There are crossover (aka "American") blends eg Sillem's Black and Boswell's Northwoods that have some Latakia but a forgiving aromatic room note
Happy wife, happy life ;) puffy
I have enjoyed that genre quite a bit, particularly Lane HGL, it was actually one of the first blends I tried that impressed me with both flavor and easy smoking qualities.
Got the RLP this time because I figured that I can always add a bit of one of my heavy english blends to it to make a similar crossover blend.

I've tried a few aromatics but none of them I've found to taste nearly as good as they smell. Many members have said if your cadence is good enough you'll be able to get much more flavor out of them, so I'm shelving my RLP-^ and 1M and sticking with Englishes and VaPers for the time being. Recently I did get some Molto Dolce, I'm looking forward to trying it next time I'm in the mood for a sweet blend.

Have you tried these?

Great smelling and tasting. ;)

P.S. Everyone’s smells and tastes certainly vary, but these do taste as good, as they smell. :)

Well, the RLP arrived today, and I’m on my second bowl.
Its wife approved, though she says she liked my MacBarren Plumcake just as much.
I‘m overall impressed, finding it to be smooth and flavorful, retrohaling or a French inhale allows the aromas to further be enjoyed.
The much repeated paradigm that it’s better to learn on English blends, and then you can better appreciate aromatics definitely seems to hold true in this case.

My wife is tolerant of my pipe smoking, even in the room with her. But when I tried some HGL, she complimented it even from the next room.

I'm mostly a non-aromatic smoker, but sometimes an aromatic blend really hits the spot.

HGL is going to have to be my next tobacco order, one of my absolute favorites, and as you say still very friendly in aroma.

I have come around to enjoying CB and other classic Aro's as well. I will give another vote to Mac Barens 7 Seas line as well, really tasty aromatics.

The Country Squire line of house blends should be mentioned as well. I really love Old Toby and their Sweet Burley amongst others.
