My car's been in the shop for two months. Rear view camera can't be ordered due to lack of availability. Been bugging them and finally decided on aftermarket parts. Got a call couple of days ago saying it's ready. Been getting call every day it's ready. Been busy with the family business. So went to pick it up this morning. Radio's not working. The wheels are off alignment. And it drives like crap! Took it right back. Explained why I'm so pissed. Two months of wait and I'm getting my car in this shape? They got an earful. Told them to fix it, and fix it right. Now more waiting. Some mornings are just not worth getting up. I need smoke.

Took my Z in to have the top 'fix' installed, it's a 370 convertible, they have a manufacturing flaw with these tops, the bands they use suck. The guy tells me that the "fix" for their shitty product is $1100 and i freak, i bought the car 100 days earlier from Carmax, it's a 2017 and had 9000 miles on it. The guy tells me maybe carmax will pay for it ... oh wait 100 days, i missed their warranty by like 2 days. So i complained and the Nissan dealer service guy told me he would see what he could do, he called me back in the shop like an hour later and said Nissan agreed to apply the fix... gee thanks for fixing your defective product.

I leave the car with them and they give me a windup toy rental for the 2 weeks it takes them, I get it back and the guy tells me "ok you can't use the top for 4-5 weeks and you have to park it in the sun, the top needs to heat up so the bands stretch in the heat. I thought he was joking but this is how they build them and in the factories they have massive parking structures with heat lamps in them to heat the tops .... fucking voodoo shit going on. Cool get the car, park in the sun, 4 1/2 weeks later i try the top and it kind of sticks and i have to push it to get it to open up, i call him and he says that' is normal for the first couple weeks of use, i also tell him it sounds like something is "rolling around" in-between the layers of the top, a screw or bolt or something and that the top doesn't seem right. He tells me to bring it in and they will look ....

Bring it in and he tells me they didn't find anything in the top and it's good to go. Great drive home, pull the top down a bit to get it to close, and think I'm set.

The next day i go to open the top, push on it, and i mean LIGHTLY ... and i hear a loud bang and the top completely stops working! Won't go up, won't go down, it's going to rain .... So i call and tell them the top isn't working at all now and it's going to rain, can i bring it in and park it inside there since I don't have a garage, no problem they say.

Bring the car in, get a light home.

A week later they call me, "So just curious Mr. Landau what did you do to the top?" Told him i did nothing was just trying to close it .... this is when i find out a 1/2 inch thick U shaped piece of steel that the roll bar of the top sits and rotates in SNAPPED IN HALF ... he said it was impossible for me to break it by pushing on the top and they have never seen that happen and have no idea what to do because the U is welded to the subframe of the car, one on each side.

Back in my shitty loaner car, get a call after two more weeks, they talked to Nissan factory headquarters, they have never seen this happen either, it just shouldn't every happen and never has, so now since I had the $1100 fix done i got a 1 year warranty on the top with it, and they are going to fix my car ... except there are no top assemblies in the US ... they have canvas .. but i need the entire assembly from subframe up and they have to look for one hopefully there is one in Japan at the factory.... so i wait ... 4 weeks go by and i get a call they found a top in Japan and they are going to ship it to the US ... so i wait... 3 weeks later the top has arrived ... but the regular nissan techs at the dealership can't install it ... they need guys from the Nissan factory in the US to fly to FL to install it ... so i wait .. lol.... another week goes by and they call me that my car is ready .. i go in to get it the top is closes i said "can i try it before i leave?" ... nope have to park it in the fucking sun again HAHA ... i told him they could just give me a new 400 when they came out and keep the car, he laughed, he said if i bought it from them that might have actually been an option.

I asked them if i could have the canvas from the old top as a spare and i was told no, they took the entire car about down to the frame, took the entire assembly from the subframe up, crated it and shipped it to Japan ... so it seems that since the steel snapped there was a huge issue, the steel that is made to use the cars could have had issues and they needed to study the frame and do metallurgy tests on the steel and samples from that batch to compared them.

In the end the car I paid $34,000 to carmax for had $32,900 in work (Nissan's charges for top, work, shipping, flight and time for two factory workers, etc.,) done.... and they fucked up the alignment on the rearview camera even.. see there was a tie in if you read this far... congrats.

Oh and when i saw the final bill i asked the guy if i could have one of the Z coffee mugs they sell and he said "yah for 20 bucks" even though i pointed out as my service advisor he just got paid his percentage on my final bill to which he replied "that's true but YOU didn't pay the bill" ... he ended up giving me three free alignments ... and no i refused to give them money for the mug after that. lol

Last time I took my truck in to get brakes, I dropped it off with a full tank of gas, and it was on empty when I got it back. I asked them if they had been testing the brakes out on the interstate or something. I was pissed.

I hope they get it right for you this time.

300+ miles of brake testing? Yeah, somebody really enjoyed your truck for a while.

it blows my mind how long it takes people to get their cars back these days. And how nonapologetic the shops and insurance are about it. Seems like it went that way when the computer systems in cars made it harder for people to do their own repairs and fixes and other things. Makes me glad I live somewhere walkable.

The computer can make most repairs (at least diagnosis) easier for the shade tree mechanic... unless it is the computer that needs repairs.

Since this tread reminded me of my lack of a 370 coffee mug.

Trained mechanics like other trades people are in short supply, and the old guard is retiring daily. In my area there are TV ads for young people to come and train in automotive careers of all kinds.

The car before my current one was a Subaru that I bought new but that needed a series of warranty-covered repairs -- two air conditioning repairs, two engine fans, and a blown wheel bearing on a car I bought new, within the first few years.

But my point is, I had a heroic service manager who took care of me at every turn. He provided a rental car at dealer expense in one instance. And service was always prompt. Of course, this was eight or nine years ago. The service manager is deceased now, and I mourn him sincerely. His was a better time.

Young people who don't want to go to college, or young people who may have degrees but have not found a career path related to those degrees, should definitely look at training in the trades. The needs are deep and wide, with good livings to be made.

I took my old Hyundai in to the shop and called and told me it was ready. Got a check engine light before I got even halfway home. Not amused. Got a Toyota and it's been running strong for 8 years.

I’ve owned a Haynes repair manual for every car Iv ever owned and got an OBD computer reader maybe 15 years ago.

There’s so much you can do with those 2 things and not worry about some putz messing up your car in a shop for $100+ and hour. Even if it costs me a Saturday in time, it’s still worth it over who knows what those shops are doing.

On a little better note, I suppose, my wife's car is a 2011 and she doesn't want a newer one and that's ok by me. But, recently the transmission was acting up a little so I took it in, hoping a service would solve the issue. The first place thought it was shot and wouldn't touch it but recommended a local transmission shop. The second place looked it over, checked the computer, painted a better picture and did a service on it. Got it back and it was worse. Now the second place said it needed a new transmission and estimates were as high as 8k (dealership) for a replacement when I called around. I ended up going with Kennedy who rebuilds on site and who had never seen the car before this and crossed my fingers. It turns out it just needed a secondary valve body and escaped with a bill of "only" $1,500. It all seems to be a roll of the dice.

Was a Buick man. Then got an Olds. Big mistake. Strictly Honda now. They just seem like never breakdown. The Buick was lovely. Old enough even I can do the needed repairs. Olds was amazing until the payment finished. I was going to the dealership so often they knew me by the name. "Hey! Our favorite sucker customer!"
