These pipes are left natural when they're made. I treated them with Odie's Oil and carnuba. The carnuba didn't bring out the sheen anymore than the oil did. The oil must have some wax in it. I know the pipe looks somewhat unfinished, but I guess that's the look they were going for.

That's a "Sportsman" series pipe which Brigham used to make and sell at the old Toronto Sportsman's Show. These pipes were of the same quality briar as their associated finished pipes (3 dot - 5 dot) and were sold with the rough(ish) just-filed look that you see on yours. They were also left unstained to colour up naturally while smoking. Folks at the show would be able to watch pipe-makers rough out the pipe, fit the stem, and perform cursory finishing (usually topping and sanding the bowl) before buying the pipe at the show.
These pipes were sold at a discount to the traditional smooth and rusticated finishes found in B&M stores are were typically thicker walled. They were definitely working-man pipes.
You won't get the polish on these pipes that you do with a smooth finished pipe as Brigham Sportsman pipes won't have had the same level of finish sanding as a smooth pipe would.
Enjoy your pipe!

Pat, THANK YOU for that info, your story falls right into place. I've kept wondering about the story behind these pipes. I've had five of them for a while now, and decided what I was going to do with them when I saw the thread on Odie's Oil. I smoked this one for the first time today, and it's a goodie. I actually like the rustic look they have. I'm going to save this thread.
