I really like how an Olive Wood pipe smokes but seldom does one find one with figural grain, not so with this Apple Lovat with Cumberland Stem from Abi Natur.

Nice pipe and great taste, per the usual fish! Love the brindle stem with the grain of the olivewood. I am having a hard time resisting the urge to pick up one of those Eckhard Stohr's that Maxim has priced ridiculously low at 40% off!

Peck, I feel it's got about nearly the same qualities as strawberry wood just a bit easier to heat up if you puff with abandon, although I have one seriously thick walled strawberry wood pipe that's a puffing machine on par with any briar, can't wait to test this against the other 2 I have, cheers.

seacaptan,

As any pipe be it made from briar, strawberry wood, olive wood or even a corn cob, note I left Morta and Meerscaum out since they tend to let you know you're puffing too quickly, the vary on their smoking quality
I liken olive wood pipes to have similar characteristics to the oil cured briar pipes with thin walls and some strawberry wood pies, that is to say they are for sipping or rather a relaxed contemplative smoke, one should not puff with abandon as I am guilty of on occasion.. For the same reason they don't tend to be your best choice for windy conditions since they can overheat, I purchased a few vintage wind screens to see if these will make a difference and will test them on a couple of cobs that tend to smoke hot in the wind.
Having one with this much grain may actually give a different experience and once in hand I'll test it against the other 2 I currently have, one is rather plain and the other has partial grain coverage, both smoke well but a little added care while smoking is required as to not overheat them, I do love the flavor imparted since it is unlike any other pipe, cheers.
