seacaptan,
As any pipe be it made from briar, strawberry wood, olive wood or even a corn cob, note I left Morta and Meerscaum out since they tend to let you know you're puffing too quickly, the vary on their smoking quality
I liken olive wood pipes to have similar characteristics to the oil cured briar pipes with thin walls and some strawberry wood pies, that is to say they are for sipping or rather a relaxed contemplative smoke, one should not puff with abandon as I am guilty of on occasion.. For the same reason they don't tend to be your best choice for windy conditions since they can overheat, I purchased a few vintage wind screens to see if these will make a difference and will test them on a couple of cobs that tend to smoke hot in the wind.
Having one with this much grain may actually give a different experience and once in hand I'll test it against the other 2 I currently have, one is rather plain and the other has partial grain coverage, both smoke well but a little added care while smoking is required as to not overheat them, I do love the flavor imparted since it is unlike any other pipe, cheers.
