Quick question for the Peterson experts out there -- have been looking for an older (pre-Republic or London/Dublin marked) Peterson 999 off-and-on for a while, but whenever I find a nice one it invariably has a P-lip stem. How uncommon are the 999's from those periods with "regular" stems? Think I've only seen a handful without the P-lip. Just curious...

Some lines were fishtale stems, but they are uncommon. Donegal Rocky Petersons are one of those lines, but rarely before the 1960's. I own or owned these.

Irish Made (date unknown)

Dublin & London. Tony Soderman was the seller and dated it to 1937-1948, so, they are out there. I put up with this one because it smokes so well, despite the odd looking button.

Thanks for the reply. I have definitely seen 1 or 2 Peterson 999's from the "Dublin & London" era with regular (non P-lip) stems, so I know at least some of those exist (although don't know how common they are). I am not sure about the Pre-Republic era Peterson 999's, though. I think I saw one or two examples of Pre-Republic 999's with standard stems somewhere in @JimInks "What Are You Smoking" threads at some time in the past, but perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me? Getting older... :)

FYI --- if you want to have your cake and eat it too, It's possible to get a second interchangeable fish tail made for pretty much any pipe.

Here are a Fatty and a Skinny 999 that were both originally P-lips:

I’m just an ordinary pipe smoker and certainly no Peterson expert. I cannot answer your original question about the relative availability of “older” period 999s without a P-lip. But it was heck of an easy thing to buy a 999 about 12 years ago with a regular fishtail stem. Mine is pictured below and it most certainly did not have a P-lip, the fishtail came as standard. I can’t remember if I bought it online from Smokingpipes.com or from the McCranie‘s store stock in Charlotte, but it was around 2012. I love the Peterson 999 classic Rhodesian shape.

Your memory is out buying Sutliff tobacco before it goes away. ;) Both of mine have the p-lip.

I have a much later one with a fish tail.

@ssjones knows more than I do, so take his word on the subject.

Haha... Yes, memory is not always accurate! ;)

I believe I was in fact actually thinking of a thread that @ssjones posted back in 2015 on a vintage (1922-1938?) Peterson 999 Deluxe he had picked up on eBay and restored (although that pipe had a P-Lip)...
