In his book Rare Smoke -The Ultimate Guide to Pipe Collecting, author Richard Carleton Hacker wrote this, in part, in reference to the Marxman pipe: "But perhaps Bob Marx's greatest contribution to pipe smoking was his decision to take out numerous four color ads on the back cover of Pipe Lover's Magazine, a marketing move that made if financially possible for George Cushman to keep publishing his labor of love until the ads stopped."

It is crazy to read through these magazines and see how the experiences back then with pipes was so similar to now. One editorial was a college student writing about his experience with learning to smoke a pipe and how the quality of the pipe does matter. He smoked the varnish off of a $.50 pipe and then bought a proper briar pipe for $5. Great reading material.

Pipe Lovers was published from January 1946 - April 1950. It was sold and continued for a handful of monthly issues starting May 1950 as The American Smoker Formerly Pipe Lovers which was in a smaller format with content expanded to include cigars and cigarettes. There are bound volumes of Pipe Lovers that were sold by year (some of the 1949 volumes include the four 1950 issues, some don't) that are nice items if you can find them.

Thanks! It looks to be an hour and twenty minute drive from where we are in PA and two hours and seventeen minutes from Brooklyn.

I would recommend calling them before you go if you are looking for something specific. I just called them and got on their call-back list for anything pertaining to tobacco pipes in a book or magazine. Also, if you go there in the peak of summer or winter, dress accordingly. The upstairs in not insulated and can get both stifling and freezing.
