I picked it up on ebay. I don't know much about them, but after research, I've determined it's pre-republic era. Appears to never have been smoked. I could tell it had age, but never guessed pre-1949. I bought it to smoke, but not sure if I should now. Opinions please?

Some buy to smoke, others to collect and yet others call themselves smokellectors. Personally, if I liked it enough to buy it, I would probably smoke it. Unless I could re-sell it for some ridiculous amount of money.

This is the route personally I would go with, then take the money and buy several new pipes and tobacco. It depends of course on what you want to do. But before smoking it I would assess it's value. You don't find unsmoked pipes that old every day.

Thanks for re-affirming my gut feeling guys. I paid under $15 after shipping, so I'll be breaking her in this weekend.

Damn, you got a killer deal, especially if it is unsmoked. I'm a smoker personally, not a collector. I don't think i would ever buy a pipe i wouldn't smoke. Different folks, different strokes. If and when you fire it up, let us know how she smokes. Cheers and happy puffing!

As long as it still has all the letters. If the -son is missing, don't smoke it. You do not want to tell anyone you smoked a 70 year old peter over the weekend.

Unless you suddenly want to become a collector (nothing wrong with that) or you hope to sell it for a modest profit (it's not a many thousand dollar pipe after all), I would say smoke it - and right away too!
Also - congrats on your pre-republic Pete.

There's some info here on them

There's a few estates on ebay in the 400-500 range from the pre-republic era, there's also some that can be had for under 100$. Are you sure it's unsmoked or just a really good restoration?
