Finally received my new Mastro De Paja rusticated straight apple. Along with it came a tin of Hamborger Veermaster and a tin of Reiner Long Golden Flake. I have been yearning for a tin of Hamborger Veermaster as I haven't had one in years. Smokingpipes finally got it back in so I snagged a few tins. I forgot how good of a bright Va flake Hamborger Veermaster was. It has the typical Va/candied sweet potato sweetness to it, but it also has very grassy, citrusy and spicey notes that tingle, pop and fizz over the entire smoke. I finally am able to put my finger on the spice profile after spending some time away from this tobacco. the hay and citrus qualities get stronger towards the 2nd 3rd of the bowl and along with it comes a light flavour of ground coriander seed and a generous portion of high quality paprika. The Pipe looks, feels and smokes like a dream. I will give a full review of Hamborger Veermaster after a little more time with this tin. I'm about to watch "Unforgiven" and try the Reiner Long Golden Flake. If it tastes as good as it smells I will be in Va/Per heaven.
Cheers.
P.

Wow Phil! I love that pipe! It is gorgeous.
I also love Hamborger Veermaster.
You got some pretty cool flavors out of that. The flavors I got were a little different, but this was from a tin that has been opened for a year with the tobacco a little dry.
Here's what I got for comparison:
The tin aroma is sweet berries, perhaps raspberry. It doesn't bite at all. One of the flavors I've detected reminds me of a BBQ sauce - sweet and tangy. It's a very tasty Virginia that packs a little of punch in the nicotine department. My first bowl got me a little buzzed. In addition to the sweet & tangy sensations, some of the sweet berry tastes come through, and as you progress, it changes to a berry herbal tea taste.
Beautiful Mastro De Paja and a great photo too.

Yeah I really am in love with that pipe. I really and truly was planning on stopping after that last Stanwell that I bought. Then about a week later this beauty came up on a smoking pipes update. I really did try to say no, but, c'mon, look at that thing. And at a price tag of just $90.00 I could not say no. It has everything I love, fine, well executed tight rustication that gives it that bucolic charm and provides a wonderful tactile sensation, deep red stain, perfectly round apple shaping leading to a bit of an unorthodox yet masculine square shank which is treated with the slightest touch of nickel, a long amber stem with a nickel dot close to the shank that tapers to a very comfortable razor thin bit, and she is long and light...no more than 34 - 36 grams. All that and she has a surprizingly generous tobacco chamber and smokes like a dream. I felt bad for giving in to my PAD, but I would have been bummed if I missed out on this pipe.

Beautiful pipe Phil.
I am wondering, if the square shank is coming into vogue (again).

Been seeing a lot of them lately.

Kind of like the white stem fad, but I think it will be much more enduring as a "fashion".

I'm not really partial to coloured stems myself, but it works so so well in this composition. Everything comes together so well in this pipe.
