I was on the fence about trying one of these cobs for a long time but after receiving the Chesapeake model and the annual NY Pipe club bbq I was no longer on the fence. I thought I would miss the modern stem but not so much. The bamboo stem fits perfectly in between my crooked teeth. Anyway that model is pretty small and I wanted to try a bigger one...

So my question is, with the larger ones like Virginia planter and richmond is the stem thicker? Or rather is the bore wider than the smaller ones or the same?

If I had one for comparison I could tell you for sure, but I just measured mine for you. I have a Virginia Planter and I love it, by the way. Measuring the stem I get about 1/4" outside diameter and 1/16" inside diameter, if that helps at all.

Yeah that's what mine is give or take a 64th, thank you tho Carolinachurchwarden. I feel like that would be restrictive, as it is with this one the draw is find but after a couple smokes even with a pipe cleaner pass I think the moisture makes it swell a bit and co strict. Once it's clean and dry it's fine again.

Actually, it might be an 1/8" inside diameter. I'm at the office and typically use an engineers scale, not the architectural one I used. I think I was off a tad. Yeah, should be 1/8th of an inch inside. I'm sorry. One reason I hate architectural scales.

I'd say the stem is only slightly thicker, so you probably won't notice it. They're nicely crafted cobs, as you see, and something most pipes smokers will enjoy.

I think Old Dominion cobs are about the best for re-enactors for being authentic to any time back as far as corncob pipes were smoked. I don't know anyone else who makes reed stem high quality cobs for commercial sale.
