A well-known pipe collector was once a nationally ranked power lifer, for example. I'm sure he remembers his PR for each lift.

Which got me wondering what sort of stuff us KevinBoarders have done.

I ranged between sucky and mediocre at every sport I ever seriously liked except one, which was bicycle riding/racing over long distances. Not Race Across America caliber (though if I'd started younger I might have gotten to that level), but was a top fifteen finisher in the Race Across Indiana. Also did a 100 mile no-draft de facto time trial called the Hancock Horizontal Hundred in 4 hours, 18 minutes, and 8 seconds.

Your turn. puffy

As a kid/teen I did 2 years each of soccer, tennis, badminton, field hockey, rugby, volleyball, as well as surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding. I found that although I enjoyed being active, I have no particular drive to 'win' or even improve. So, aside from 'player of the day' given to me occasionally (quite possibly out of pity) no records here.

Won a few best of shows homebrewing, and was once a damn good rock climber.

But my real claim to fame is I once beat Tiger Woods playing golf. Sure, I was playing in good health on a sunny course in Hawaii and he was playing with the flu in dog shit weather in The Open Championship, but that day, ON THAT DAY, I shot 77 and he shot 81. Suck it, Tiger.

I haven't achieved anything spectacular in sports, but am relatively proud of some achievements:

I played in the 1988 Lucky Strikes Challenge of the Champions International Dart Tournament. I didn't get out of the Round Robin stage, but, I gave Nicky Virachkul a scare and almost beat him in the Round Robin. I learned a lot from the UK players about using the bullseye to set up outs for 95 and under.

I placed Top 32 in Cricket Doubles in the 1988 New Orleans Dart Open with my friend, Bill McHone and we made our money back.

Won 1st Place in the Manhattan Money League in Cricket Doubles with my friend, Jim Birmingham.

Came in 2nd in 501 Singles in the Metro Dart League (lost to Jim Birmingham), got a couple of 2nd place team trophies in the Metro League (one year was a thrill—we played short handed through the semis and I hit the winning shot that got us into the finals—I still remember my arms going numb and my ears ringing when I hit the winning double and seeing my friend, John Blumel, jumping into the air in slow motion as I whipped around with both arms bent at the elbows, fist clenched).

Got 2nd Place in a low rated Singles event at the Westfield, NJ Open Table Tennis tournament.

Nothing stellar, but, memorable.

I'll be damned, Mr. Monkey.

I took a turn at darts about the same time as you. Late '70's through 1986 and '87. Was the captain of a team that won the Phoenix Metro league championship three seasons straight (the last game of the winning match was down to either hitting a double bull out, or the near certainty that the opposing team would win with their next throw... so I went for the bull and got it with my final dart). Last match of the season, last game, last leg, last dart. Fun times. :) )

Beat a guy at cricket in a best of three one-on-one who was a national-class player a few months later--the only game I ever played that had a true crowd watching---and was told shortly after that some committee wanted me as a Western States All Star alternate for the coming world championships in Las Vegas. Never got called up, though.)

Then I met a girl named Mary-Ann who, um, was really REALLY good at making me think of things besides darts, and I stopped playing for several years... Never did anything worth mentioning after that layoff. Just some low level league stuff in Ohio. Plastic arcade darts was taking over, anyway. (Insert puking noise of disgust) They said it was an insurance thing, yadda yadda.

I still have a shoebox half full of titanium barrels and the stuff to go with 'em, though, so in my next life I'd love to try it again. :)

The army took a fat, chain smoking, directionless blob and enabled it to do a 12 mile road march with a weapon, 70 pounds of battle gear and shitty boots within 3 hours.

Earning my Expert Infantryman's badge was a personal achievement I remind myself of when other, petty things are in my way.

Of course, now my feet are destroyed and I'm reverting into a blob. Ashes to ashes, as they say...

I was always a mediocre and undisciplined athlete. I played baseball, lacrosse and soccer growing up. I enjoyed batting practice the most so I was basically a one tool player.

George, that is so funny—my darts game took a backseat (and a dive) after a girl I met playing darts moved in with me. The dartboard was near the bed and practice went out the window. The days of hitting rounds of nine daily came to an end. I developed a hitch in my smooth throw and got to the point where I could barely let go of the dart (probably a fear of failure).

I’ve tried playing in a lower division for a few seasons a few years back, but, I couldn’t get to the level of consistency that made it fun for me and stopped. I did get a Unicorn Dartmate Pro 2 for the house and hope to practice again once we get the house fixed up and boxes unpacked (could be awhile). I miss it, but, it has proven more frustrating than fun.

First gold medal and trophy. 1986 Grandfather Mountain Highland Game for Grade V. After that, everything was downhill for solo piping for me.

Oh! There was Savannah Highland Game. Piob competition. Was doing great, then oil tanker blew the fucking fug horn and I fucked it up.

My first degree testing for kendo. Drank too much night before the testing. Heavily hungover. The opponent was being very aggressive, so I held the center, gave good kiai. He ran straight into my shinai, shinai ended up inside of his face guard. Got my first degree.

I was always decent to great in the sports I chose to focus on, but absolutely hated team sports (football, primarily). Athletically, I am very good at visually deconstructing how to mimic what others do. As a result, I am a 3rd level master in Kali now and will be a Sifu in traditional wing chun by 2024. I don't care about awards, though, so I do not compete in those to win anything.

I excelled at being bad at sports, with two exceptions, volleyball and soccer. It wasn't that I was stellar at either of these, but was just considerably better than the surrounding specimens. Volleyball, in particular, I played as blood sport, spiking head shots whenever possible. I did have to tone it down a bit at Disney. Putting a lead animator in the hospital during a midday game wouldn't do.

At school I was hopeless at soccer, cricket, rugger, tennis, gymnastics....but I could run, and run and run.

I was in the cross country team of both my schools and loved every moment of it.

If I'd have lived further north I should imagine I would easily have taken up fell running but as things were, running around the Peak District suited me just fine.

Now I can barely walk from one room to another .

Regards,

Jay.

At U of I satellite campus at Navy Pier, I did all of my required college P.E. These ended up being gymnastics, at which I was barely proficient, boxing, badminton, and fencing.

In boxing, I was the lightest weight guy in the class, and all of the other flyweights dropped out by the third session. I was great at the light bag, could really make it sing, since I had a bag at home. But in actual bouts, I was at the mercy of much larger guys who apparently decided not to kill me.

That was my record. Surviving boxing class.

I liked fencing a lot. The coach who taught the course actually suggested I might be competitive in epee, one of the styles of weapon along with foil and saber. But I never did fencing again.

Later I took up what was then called jogging, and off and on ran regularly and entered some 5K and 10K runs. I was puzzled that I never got beyond the middle of the pack. I think it might have been a heart murmur; however, I notice this did not in any way affect my eligibility for selective service. I finished a four-year hitch in the Navy without ever attending sick bay, which during the Vietnam War was luck or grace. I was, however, vaccinated for a record number of diseases, some of which I'd never heard of.

As a kid I tried a lot of things like basketball, swimming and soccer but stuck with wrestling, made this states 3rd place. Later on I got into kickboxing and made it a little farther than the first yellow belt.
Could've easily gotten the orange belt but decided to get into regular boxing instead which was pretty easy coming out of kickboxing since I didn't have to worry about any feet kicking me in the face.

Got pretty good and won a fistful of amateur fights against guys that seriously wanted to climb the ladder,
had in mind to keep fighting until I lost. Which I did.
I kept training and eventually stopped, now my stamina and good form is in shambles but I still keep up with some weight lifting and occasional training of combinations, footwork and shadow boxing for the good ol' times.

Whoops. I meant tungsten, not titanium. They're both metals, and begin with the letter T, and at least I didn't say tritium, so that's something... :(
