you have a duck pond. Closest I got to that is a hole that always has groundhogs. Groundhogs that get used to me, never tried to pick one up but seriously they might have rolled with it. Had a three parent duck family living in my neighborhood once.... You have a duck pond? That's a thing people have?
Was on the property when I bought it in the late '80s. Lots of water fowl like ducks and cranes visit but these are our first swans. My only additions were the walkway and railing.

I've got groundhogs too. Sometimes a big elder one follows me around the yard for treats.

Birds can be fierce. My wife's cat, before they moved to N.C., encountered a guinea hen couple and tried to stalk them, and they looked down at her disdainfully, like, "You poor little fool." The cat got the message and stayed put. I was carrying one of my long ago cats through a pet store and he saw a parrot who fixed his eye on the cat and picked up an apple and chopped it effortlessly in half with its bill. My cat looked elsewhere. On Midway Island, I photographed an albatross family -- parents and chick on their nest -- and the male decided I was too close and marched over and bit my knee. No blood, but a good bruise. I admired his courage.

Some people have advanced communications with creatures. Years ago, I took our little black cat to the vet to have her claws clipped because she became maniacal. It took someone to hold her and someone to clip, and you could hear her yow outside the clinic, and her face was full of the devil. Except when Tabitha, the vet tech, showed up, with many facial piercings and tattoos. She sat down in the lobby, put the cat in her lap, and clipped her nails. I was astonished. I said, "That is a talent." And Tabitha said, "I know." Apparently she worked with horses the same way.

A duck pond on your property, very nice! For winter swans normally leave? Or aren't there normally swans in it? Overhere some leave, some stay all winter as it never gets cold for a very long time

Where we used to live, had a playground park nearby. The first time we took our daughter there to play, there was two of the most beautiful swans I've ever seen floating in the pond. I brought out my phone, and started taking pictures immediately. I got closer and closer, and they just sat there almost like statues. They didn't care that I was there at all. Then i for sure thought I had gotten close enough for them to swim or fly away, and yet nothing. I ended up getting so close to these birds, that I could see the seam going down the middle of the plastic body.

I hung my head in shame, as I deleted roughly 100 pictures of a plastic bird from my phone.

Still laugh about it today. ?
