Great story!
Except this part...
let’s face it, in this day and age, anyone caught trying to smoke something that resembles a prop from “The Lord of the Rings” would immediately be called a jerk.
Made me a little angry inside lol But I suppose in his neck of the woods it may be true.
Thanks for keeping us informed once again Kevin!

Cool, thanks Kevin. I like the historical stuff. Can you believe those huge shelves in the picture!

I went to Keen's a couple of years ago when I was on vacation in NYC. If you like to consume gigantic amounts of animal protein, you must check this place out. Walking through the front door is like walking into an episode of the Twilight Zone or the hotel bar in The Shining. Literally nothing has changed in this place for almost 100 years, including the waiters in tuxedos and white gloves. If you go, try the mutton chops. You'll never forget this experience.

Nice read Kevin. I would be curious if the author was really a pipe smoker, or if this was just a story to fill space.

My dad used to go to Keens on business in the late 1950's, early 1960's and he had a pipe there. I called several years ago and tried to see if it was still there but because of the fire in 1972 when they lost the log book I was told it's not possible.
Dad passed away almost 3 years ago. I don't have the number of his pipe but I suppose a letter can't hurt, you never know.

From my reading of the story, the guy is admittedly NOT a pipe smoker. He went to retrieve his gift that was given before he was 2-years old. It was the first time he ever smoked a pipe at the end of the story. It was more a story of the tradition than his personal pipe smoking.

Great story. Seems odd to have a pipe that can only be smoked outside the restaurant.

Pipe smoking is more than an acitivity. It's part of man's culture through history. Many of our finest minds of the past 500 years have been pipe smokers. We need more not less pipe smokers.

That's a cool story. I never knew such places ever existed, but it does make sense. I used to work for a restaurant that sold cigars at the checkout, back in the 80's. What could be better that smoking fine tobacco after a good meal? Kudos to traditions like this one.

I have no idea why they would present that fiend Bloomberg with a pipe though.
There's two ways to deal with the anti's. Kill them with kindness. Or fight to the death. Each has a place and time.

Neat story. It's just sad that with all these smoking bans a piece of history and tradition will slowly fade away.
