He looks qualified! What a cool thing to do and the guy looks like he'll enjoy it. An oath from 1272? Couldn't find one of those in these parts, lol. I know nothing of ale, but hope to give some a try come late spring - that town looks to be having a great celebration.

Other old terms for the job was 'ale conner' and 'alefounder'.

ale conner, noun.​


An officer appointed by a court leet or other local authority to test for the assize (assize n. 4) the ale brewed (and sometimes the bread baked) in his or her jurisdiction. Cf. aletaster n., alefounder n.
