In my opinion the primary goal of politicians regardless of what they say is to muster votes. They feel as do marketing people that a very good way to do this is to make women in particular feel that they are protecting their kids.Ever notice how much advertising is done in the name of making someone a good parent. It's used by the antis to make parents feel that they're protecting their kids from the image of us evil pipe smokers by passing these smoking bans..Popeye,Santa,and Frosty Are but a few who no longer are shown with pipes.I've read that The Tom & Jerry cartoons have been run through computers to remove the cat's cigarette smoking from them.In part smoking bans are an attempt to further remove the image of someone smoking from the eyes of these young kids. After all you can't be a perfect parent unless you have perfect kids.Today we live in a society where young boys are bombarded with alcohol commercials, sexual images, and violence. The populist have convinced politicians though that they must not see us evil ones smoking our pipes.Perish the thoughts that they would grow up and join our ranks.

The problem is that all advertising to young kids influences them; wether it be food, tobacco or other things. It'd be better to outlaw all these things, or atleast ban them before a certain time in the evening. In the UK, we have the 9pm watershed for this. But most of the corporations that advertise are too strong/influential/rich in the US for this to happen. So easy targets like the tobacco industry, with easily recognised risks such as cancer and heart disease get the impact.
If you want a good society, teach them all the dangers and benefits of EVERYTHING, let them have more access to the legal and illegal, and make sure they're in a good position to make an informed choice when they're old enough to do so.

It's thoroughly disgusting. The media and Hollywood, et al. are quick to censor smoking, but allow

-- and even glorify -- violence and drug use.

It is what it is. Probably always was like that too. I'm building a tree-house for my kids this summer. Once "they" outlaw my smoking in my house and my garage, then I'll go up the tree to have my smokes!
