Hi all. I've been lurking here for a while but haven't signed up until today. I first smoked a pipe in 1986 at 16. My dad was a pipe smoker and I was curious. I had smoked cigarettes before that but that Dr grabow with captain black gold in it was much better. Unfortunately before I could try it again, my dad quit smoking and didn't tell anyone. The pipes and tobacco and the ethan allen colonial smoking stand were all gone. Nobody noticed. I guess he just threw it out. He died 21 years later and never touched it again.

Like any rebel kid in the 80s, college bro in the 90s and 20 something bar hopper I smoked cigarettes. Quit a few times but came back. Not because addiction but more likely its due to my ADD I needed something to fidgit with.

I started piping again in the early 2000s I'm not sure why. I stopped smoking cigarettes and got addicted to buying pipes and tobacco. Not necessarily smoking them-which I did and I enjoyed- but another issue I have is hyper focus which can come in handy but most of the time just gets in the way of real life. I spent hours looking at pipes on line, bidding on them on eBay and running to tinder box for more Sherlock choice and chocolate delight. I quit when I started having kids because I just didn't have the time to dedicate to the hobby. Recently I've been doing a little puffing with the pipes I didn't sell.

My favorite pipe is a newer meershram lined kaywoodie that I use for latikia but most of the time I just fill up one of my corn cobs with captain black just like my dad did.
Besides Sherlock choice, my favorite tobacco was hobbit weed. I heard they discontinued it.

One tobacco I'm seeking is the kind my uncle smoked. I got a humidor rack from eBay that smelled like this tobacco. To me it smelled like an oatmeal cookie. Anyone know what it was? I'm sure it was an otc tobacco because my uncle was too cheap to buy the good stuff.

An approximate recipe for Hobbit's Weed is 1/2 Lane BCA, 1/4 Lane Very Cherry, 1/4 Sutliff 1m Vanilla, though match blends exist. As for the oatmeal cookie, probably Lane 1-Q.

Since the Captain was asleep at the helm, I'll tell you. Get yourself some Black Frigate man. A very good non aromatic that's not too strong.

Don't have to be awake anymore. My title, and signature do all the advertising for me. Besides, sounds like he's going to be an aromatic smoker.

A world of good blends out there, aromatics and non. For a year or three, try a number of blends in smallest available quantities -- one ounce bulk, single tin, pouch -- and see what you like. Trying to approximate a flavor from a residual scent is difficult because many blends don't smoke the way they smell in the tin. Jar anything you don't like and try it later, with some aging, and with your changing and developing taste.
