As I write this I am having a wonderful smoke from my Savinelli Quandale loaded with Macbaren Origional Choice. It has a lot of burley, but for some reason it's very good. Most mixtures with burley make me queasy. I prefer virginias and cavendish blends, and have been smoking a lot of virginia/latakia, and some perique blends. I really like these. But the burley in Carter Hall makes me want to puke. What's up with that?

If you are not crazy about burley try Solani ABF, you will most likely be after that.
xD

I think you're right about the OTC tobacco. OTC cavendish is often pretty rank. I don't even like Captain Black. At the same time I really Villiger 1888 After Dinner, which has burley, but it may have more to do with the perique. It seems to me that the more perique and latakia I smoke, the better I like it.

No one likes everything. I have a love hate relationship with Perique. A little of that goes a long way for me. Burley is perhaps my favorite. I say go with flow. I'll try something with Perique again. If after a few more times I haven't found a blend I like it in, oh well. Plenty of other pipe tobaccos.

Amen.
And,let's be honest, here - Carter Hall is not exactly top-notch leaf. Skip the codger burleys, and try some better quality ones. If you like Original Choice, try some other MacBaren blends - Burley London, for example.

I grew up with my dad smoking Granger, which is burley with a "Wellman process" dressing, whatever that is, that makes it aro,

but only technically from my point of view. I still smoke Granger now and then, and I enjoy it. It's a nice mild to medium smoke,

nothing fancy but a good companion.

Amen, jud.
The codger burleys should not be the standard bearers for burley.
They are so far removed from what burley should be, in my opinion, that it isn't fair to use them as a point of reference.
As suggested above, try Solani ABF or Wessex Burley Slice to see where you stand on burley.
C&D is well known for a different style of burley - earthier and stronger blends.
MacBaren is well known for lighter and Virginia influenced burley blends.
I have also heard good things about GLP burley blends (also with quite a bit of Virginia) such as Montgomery...
