In my never ending quest to avoid all tobaccos with this flavour profile, I’ve seen Half and Half and SWR identified as no go’s. Do Prince Albert and Carter Hall also fall victim to this madness? 😂

Any other popular tobaccos out there to avoid? I’m always weary of pulling the trigger on anything that may contain a hint of this taste profile.

I’ve scoured tobacco reviews, but have found blends I’ve tried where that taste isn’t mentioned but is evident - I’m looking at you Mark Twain!

Was thinking of tying the Smoker’s Pride Black Cavendish/Lane BCA. Am I safe with that pick in reference to the dreaded anise taste?

No. I’m kidding. Don’t.

It’s a popular flavor enhancer and may be the one most often used in pipe tobacco. They say it’s in Granger too, although I can’t detect it and never would have guessed.

As for licorice. It’s polarizing. I happen to like black jelly beans and Good n Plenty so I’m not at all put off by it in tobacco.

I had Granger last night and the anisette/anise was very forward.

Anise was, and still is, a popular flavor, especially in codger blends. You should avoid Mixture No. 79 like the plague. I'd avoid Velvet just to be safe. Any and all lakeland blends. Several Gawith scented flakes use anise/licorice or something akin to them.

If you're looking for bulk codger blends without that profile, maybe 5 Brothers or maybe some of the Daughters & Ryan blends?

Isn’t it strange how some flavours are loved in certain things, but not others.
I’m a chocoholic, but absolutely hated the one chocolate blend I bought.
Generally I love vanilla in cakes and ice-cream. But loathe it in rums or tobacco.

Perhaps it has to do with whether it is just a subliminal quantity or if it is overpowering.
Like aftershave or perfume.

On the other hand, I love black jelly beans. And I like Mixture 79 😋

I find that licorice/anise is a natural flavour within lots of tobaccos, or at least that is how my palette perceives the profile.

If you have an aversion to it, maybe you are picking it up more readily than the rest of us.
Do you ever pick it up from your homegrown? I wonder if tobacco's association with licorice/anise flavors isn't because of its long popularity as a sweetener, even when it's not being used to overtly flavor the blend.

Thanks all. The tobaccos I hear about most in the forums are SWR, Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Half and Half, Granger etc. Being in Canada, I’ve never had any of these. But they are spoken of so highly that they all sound almost mythical in their goodness! I feel like I’ve been really missing out! I have a vision of myself loading up a pipe full and the heavens opening up and bathing me in holy light as I smoke my Prince Albert ( without a filter of course 😂).

All joking aside, do all of these well loved OTC blends have the licorice casing?

You would very likely toss your hands in the air and say aloud, “I don’t get it!”

They’re all very simple, mellow, low nicotine, low maintenance everyday blends.

They’re loved for their simplicity.

The heavens will not envelope you.

Yeah, but that sounds right up my alley (if anise free). I enjoy what I enjoy. I smoke with a filter. I like aro’s. I can’t figure out the breath method. Low nic hit and low maintenance sounds good to me. Would like to find a cheap OTC that’s an everyday smoke to add to my order.

Carter Hall. It’s all of the above and a delicious tobacco. You can find it most anywhere, even today. There’s a reason.

Sure do. Probably closer to the flavour of chewing licorice root than confectionery. It varies from varieties and also from bowl to bowl.

When I posted earlier I was thinking of a friend who is a chef and while not really a smoker is fascinated with flavour and blending. I’d say 9 time out of 10 he will smell the tin note of what I have open, and there’a variety there as I’m smoking through all my single tins, and say oh that smells like licorice. It took me a while to realise that licorice is the starting point for his nose, and that it doesn’t necessarily mean licorice to me.
