I have received generous samples of tobaccos I could never afford or would think of buying. If any of you beginners are offered samples, please say yes – there’s a whole big world out there that you know nothing about, and the generosity of those here is genuine. My first months of OTC aros and non-aros were the little kids playing basketball in the park. Now, the big boys have shown up and pushed them aside. Everything was smoked in a MM Washington cob. Here are my initial reactions (and I look forward to sampling these all again, as well as the other ones sent):
Rattray's Red Rapparee

Pleasing to smoke. Could smell /taste something that was almost potpourri-ish, but not exactly. That may be the Oriental. The room note after was delightful, like I wanted to wrap myself in it.
Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bulls Eye Flake

Perhaps I should have smoked this first. I did not feel like there was a lot going on. Could not identify one taste /smell. Maybe that was the Perique. The room note was smoky, like I just walked into a pipe smoking lounge (which I have never done, but it is what I imagine it would smell like). Not bad, mind you. Just very tobacco-ish.
McClelland Club Celebrated Sovereign

Maddening on 2 counts. First, could NOT keep this lit. May need to cut into smaller pieces next time. Second, WHAT WAS THAT? There is a smell /taste that is definitely there, but unidentifiable. Is that the Turkish? Me likey very much! The room note was awesome, and struck me as similar to the Red Rapparee. Need to smoke back to back with Red Rapparee for better comparison.
Step aside Captain Black and all you OTCs … I am the captain now.

You have tried some fine blends. Red Rapparee is my number one tobacco. It's sharp, dry, citrusy, with a not so subtle hint of totally awesome. I like Bullseye flake...but I like Stokkebye Navy much better.
